1. Not one of the twelve devices exploded.

2. So far as I know, the devices posed no threat of exploding and none of them have been detonated.

3. All of the packages were sent with insufficient postage which guarantees that the packages will receive close attention in their handling. Past bombers, like Ted Kazcynski, used excessive postage to ensure that their devices did not receive any special attention.

4. Anyone doing even a scintilla of research would have found out that few of those targeted would ever actually see the packages.

5. The envelopes that the pipe devices (I am loathe to call them 'bombs') were packaged in guaranteed that anyone handling them would feel something unusual inside the envelope. It's extremely odd that these devices were not sent in boxes. Again, whoever sent them very likely intended for them to be easily identified and they also intended no actual physical harm to anyone.

I'm of the belief that it was more of a psychological attack than a physical attack. Akin to the "credible threats" to the Empire State Building, Golden Gate Bridge or the Hoover Dam in the days after 9/11.

Sending functional bombs may mean someone other than the intended target could die and I don't think the accused wanted that on their conscience. As I pointed out earlier, the PIRA fucked up in '93 when a bomb in Warrington UK killed 2 kids and really swung public opinion against them (The Cranberries song "Zombie" was written to protest what the PIRA had done.)

I thought I had read that at least one of the packages had to be "disrupted"

I guess we are in for a very illuminating few days.
