Well they were probably along with others who were actually removing the other IED. But yes it does seem like a strange group to send out.

One is a Jimmy too.......

We need to stick together and demand that our government bring our soldiers home NOW!!!!!

because we keep losing soldiers, doesnt mean we need to bring home our soldiers. Yes, it is a sad fact that soldiers die in combat, but it is also a fact of combat. Soldiers unfortunatly do die, I sometimes feel Canada forgets that Canada has had its share of casualties in other conflicts (WW1, WW2, Korea, various peacekeeping missions).

Besides that, how would it look to our NATO allies if we suddenly abandon the mission tomorrow?

On a CBC article it said they defused another IED and when they were returning to base, they hit another IED in their vehicle...

That's what SigPig was saying. Why's a Rad Tech farting around with an IED?

And, isn't this a little off the beaten path for IEDs? (not that there is a regulation on where they get planted .. )

I can understand what you are saying Sault but I truly believe our military has done it's part in this war and it would not be abandoning Nato or the Afghan people. Harper has now admited that there is no end in sight at this time. He has known that for a while now. I pray for all everyday and feels so much sadness for the families of our fallen. I know it is war and feel that Canadians have sacrificed enough. Our soldiers have brought some good to Afghanistan-construction, smiles on the faces of the children, rescuing helpless animals and the list goes on but it is only my opinion and my wish is that we have our soldiers-our families brought home.

It's nice to think that your buying into the spin about Harper  In the breath after he said it was unwinable he said that just staying there alone wont do anything, that Afghanistan ultimately has to carry the weight. With that said we have told everyone that we are leaving the party in 2011.

On the note of the pers killed, I can see them being there as a support role for the QRF, but to say THEY are the ones who disarmed the IED makes me scratch my head. Engineer's and Clearence Divers are the only trades I know of that have the training to RS an IED.

I think it is just over generalizing by a journalist who doesn't really know the difference. But as for raining I do know of some infanteers that are qualified to deal with explosives. There is one attached to my unit right now that has that qualification.

Ahuh, you have to be HC Val to get IEDD, to render safe IEDS. In order to get that you have to be HC and in order to get that you have to be either HB or HA qualified. There are only 4 trades I know of that get HB or HA:
1)Engineer
2)Clearence Diver
3)Ammo Tech
4)Avn Tech

He might be able to blow a abtis or do a sloppy crater group, but I doubt he is trained to deal anything more complicated.
This is kind of a sore spot with me, because we lost several people on my tour that were milling around IEDs when they shouldnt have been anywhere fucking near them.

Now they dont name what the airforce guy's trade was so he could have been either #3 or #4. Still why send one of them out when you have a EOD Det for this stuff. I think its just shotty journalism.

in the avn trade, they have three sections to it, you can be either stream A,B, or C. A being engines, B being airframe (working with landing gear and components), and C being an Armor(not to be confused with Armored). the armor's deal with all the weapons systems and ejection safety systems. they also have the option to become EOD because when they 18s do there bombing runs on the range, much the the Field engineers, not everything detonates as intended and someone has to clean it up.the avn trade is a VERY wide field of knowledge and to just say he was avn is going to raise alot of eyebrows from people who have little experience with the Airforce

Yes but, why would you give an Avn training in disarming booby traps/IEDs? EOD-IED is a combat role, Avn is NOT a combat trade.
