You should be familiar with the term - standard operating procedure. Horses dying at the stamped isn't exactly a rare event. It's to be expected.

$1:

50 horses in the races have been killed in the past 26 years.

Ie 2 per year. They're running a bit above average this year.

I hate to break it to you, but that burger you had a little while ago was made because an animal died. Many of these horses are loved by their owners, being well fed, looked after, and often considered a part of the family. The only real differences between a horse that died in the stampede and the cow that ended up in a slaughterhouse is that the horse had a name and doesn't end up on your dinner plate.

We can live without over a billion cows which we have right now, You didn't used to have meat for almost every meal, instead it was more of a treat unless you lived in a more rural area. Two horses a year die to entertain over a million people, horses that live most of their life in relative luxury compared to a lot of the cattle that major cities get (feedlot cattle). I know people that race horses, the person places themselves at extreme risk as well and the horse is treated extremely well, they are considered part of the family, a lot better treatment than cattle which often just get a number.

The Stampede should do a PETA style ad showing grandpa and young grandson sitting in an empty Calgary Grandstand looking out over an empty infield, G'son asks G'pa what happened to Chuckwagon Racing ?

As the camera pans down the race track a couple of tumbleweeds blow across it and Grandpa goes into dream mode. G'pa explains about all the protests and how the Stampede shut the races down.

G'son snaps G'pa out of the dream state for a second by asking, " but grandpa, what happened to all the horses?"

G'pa explains they were loaded up into livestock trucks ( clue horses walking up ramp into cattle liner ) and all hauled south down the QE2 to Fort Macleod. Then the're shown being unload behind a big building into stalls, all spooked up after hearing a rifle shot in the back ground.

The next clip is from a restaurant in downtown Paris showing a table full of people sitting down ready to enjoy a good, slow simmered Canadian horse flank steak with wine sauce.
