July 28

On this day, 100 years ago, Austria - Hungary declared war on Serbia, and started bombarding Belgrade.

I am right now getting started on a book about the start of the war:

Catastrophe 1914: Europe Goes To War - Max Hastings

I'll be sure to put up a review when I'm done.

Can anyone think of a time after that the world did not have some sort of conflict?

I just thought that I would remind you all that last Friday night (all night) was the 200th anniversary of the biggest, certainly most intense and violent battle ever fought on Canadian soil at Lundy's Lane. The most important battle on Canadian soil certainly took place on the Plains of Abraham but this one was far more fierce and certainly very important to future country that was to grow here. This forum is mostly Western and a lot of you might have missed the significance of this action. It is a long way away from you in time and space. For those of you with military background, this was the first real battle in history when Canadians (The Incorporated Militia) fought together as a cohesive "Canadian" unit ... about 1200 of them and they were an important part of the battle. It was also the last time that a real army was repulsed on our soil.

But plenty of tourists have been repulsed since then.

Typically by poutine. :P

:( Probably about right...

No matter who is at war (or "conflict") the result is always the same.

Soldiers die.
Civilians die.
There is never a "winner"... only survivors.

A non-violent resolution to disputes just does not seem possible anymore.

It's just what we have become.

btw martin... when I saw the title of the thread I knew it had to be you who started it  . However, neither of your links seem to work now (the news link and the on in your first post) :?:

Just don't be trying to associate me in any way with the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand. I wasn't even within a hundred miles of Sarajevo at the time.

You were way too busy riding with Pancho Villa robbing trains as one of his Villistas...

By the way, that's Hyack to the right of Villa.

The world was rarely peaceful prior to WW1 either. WW1 really only put an end to the nonsensical belief among the colonial powers and the US that war was some sort of grand adventure for our "brave and glorious lads so far away" instead of the murderous stupidity that it is and always has been. Decades-long periods of relative peace between the large powers really didn't happen until after the proliferation of nuclear weapons during the Cold War. And for people yapping and panicking over current events in Gaza, Syria, Iraq, and Ukraine, these events are practically tiny in comparison to the instability and violence that happened during the Korean War, the American war in Vietnam & Cambodia, and the Soviet war in Afghanistan.

One can never assume that things can't get worse. In reality though, despite what the media puts across and what too many of the gullible want to believe, this is actually one of the more peaceful periods in recorded history. Look past the media and see how much of the planet is stable, peaceful, and prosperous, and it is credibly arguable that war & violence is at it's lowest level in practically all of our lifetimes.
