I am currently running windows XP pro. I have a 2.8Ghz Pentium 4 processor with 512 Mb RAM. I just reformatted my comp like 3 days ago. XP is still p*ssing me off. I will be playing Battlefield Vietnam, with nothing else running, and my comp will freeze. I also hate the new security update firewall and pop-up blocker. It is stopping me from downloading patches and stuff. I have been thinking of ging back to my Windows 98 disk I have. I can still use all my programs, and being a simpler OS, it will be quite quicker. What do you people think, would it be a wise move, XP-->98?

<<- worst advice ever, macs suck so much.
I am a techie, its my life and job, and trust me XP is by far the best desktop consumer OS. It has its flaws but they are far less than others. Your BF issue is probably not Xp's fault, its most likely one of the drivers for your hardware. actually with BF try turning off the sound or turning it to a lower quality, i bet it will fix it. BF has problems with some soundcards.
A lot of the problems ppl have with windows are not always windows fault, they are poorly written drivers and 3rd party programs. XP helps and trys to enforce manufactures to have a high quality driver, that gets microsoft digitaly singed.
oh and XP is a million times better than windows 98! i personaly think the new security features in SP2 are good. all the new things it adds can be disabled, and if a user doens't have the knoledge to do so, they shouldn't.. cuz there a general risk to the internet, that the secuity features will help... if that makes sens at all

I use '98 on my main computer and XP Pro on the one I do graphics on, just so I can learn it as we are switching from NT(And God only knows why.) at work. I've heard many bad things about SP2.

Well, since the purchase of my new notebook comp...well, kind of new, i been able to actually use XP home. I never really had more than 2 hours using it before, but since I actually started using it, it became more easy and fun to use.
I always thought XP sucked because there were so many kinds of problems that were floating around about it. Windows 2K still is my favorite OS, but I hardly get to use it now.
I set up my home network, installed my printer with just a few clicks. I was amazed because with my other "black piece of crap" -- IBM CrapVista, I have windows ME running on it. Normally I always have problems with ME, but XP seemed to help get everything set up.
The only thing i didn't like about all the updates that I had to do for my XP machine is the fact that the service pack took the longest to upload and install. But now that everything is up to date, I haven't had any problems

I talked to 2 guys at work (who both build and service computers on the side) and it turns out, the reason when I reformatted, my problems didn't go away is I did it wrong. Turns out, since I didn't destroy my partition, that was the problem. SO i guess I will be reformatting again, and once again losing the ability to log into CKA...unless, can I save the cookie and put it into my internet folder after reformatting? Could I just put it on a disk, then paste it back into my internet folder? And if so, what cookie would it be. Would there be a common name for it? This could be a solution to cache clearers. Make a second copy of the cookie to elsewhere on your comp.

So does anyone know if it'll work if I just save the CKA cookie onto a disk and put it in after reformatting? I hope to know by tommrow as I will be reformatting my comp after school. Or is the logging in after cache cleaning problem fixed?

Okay, I bet none of you noticed but I was gone for a lil while. I don't know what I did wrong but when reformatting it uninstalled my operating system and it took me like 2 days of trying to find a boot disk, then the next day finding an option "Boot from CD" then for the last 3 days I found my internet wasn't working. I uninstalled the Service Pack 2 and my internet problems went away. Si I am still on XP, no problem logging in now that my net is fixed. Good to be back, only like 89679087 new posts since I left...going to take me all night to read them.

I run 98se and will until I can't get on the net anymore... I have seen the same problems with xp that DMP08 has gone through and xp has been retired to a shelf some where in case I need a coaster
I like the stability of 98 and suggest it way before xp...( just my opinion...)

Canadaka, I'm afraid I must disagree with you. I run 98se and I upgraded to XP when it came out. After I did none of my games worked anymore. It had no DirectX support, plus it was a massive drain on my system. I have seen XP in action at friends houses and I can safely say it has more holes in it than a block of swiss cheese that's been machine-gunned.
I'm sticking with 98 until Microsoft learns how to make a non-buggy OS, like Apple can

complete non-sense, unless your computer is a dinasaur. If you have over 1ghz and at least 256mb of ram, XP will run faster and better than 98 will.
98 is a dead product, it has more secuirty holes than xp, and has tons of old dos legacy code which makes it slow and unstable. XP has very little of this code, Windows Server 2003 and the next Windows Longhorn will have no legacy code.
It is true for the first couple months XP came out there was some compatability problems, but that was years ago. you will have more problems with 98 now than XP. unless you play games older than 1995!

ya...it's called window's 2000 w/ SP4
been running that for 2 years...not a single system crash.
so....
your first mistake....you got XP when it came out
second mistake....your friend probably has a dell, which i have never seen XP run smoothly on
third mistake....you reference apple
XP does have direct x support because it is the most used OS, therefore, games are played on it like Doom 3 and half life 2 which require direct x 9.0b (though you did post before these two games came out)
i ran XP for a while and is actualy installed on my secondary HD for the chance something royaly fucks up on. i get into it once and a whle to make sure files havn't been deleted or anything and it runs (resourse wise) just as well as 2000 and that IS with SP2 (not from microsoft but a third party) and i have never had a problem with it. i just disable it's fireall and use my own.
now..what you need to do is either get up with the times of XP or switch over to 2000 pro, which is basically the same GUI as 98 and not as "user friendly" as XP....though it seems you do need a user firendly system.............

If BF: Vietnam is freezing and you've patched it then try turning off/on V-Sync. BF1942 had some issues with V-Sync and maybe this game does too. I had a friend with a similer problem and I suggested changing Vsync and it solved the issue.
$1: I also hate the new security update firewall and pop-up blocker. It is stopping me from downloading patches and stuff.
I dont quite understand how it would block the downloads of patches unless the program itself was blocked in the firewall settings.
You can easily turn the features off or change their settings if your using XP SP2. The pop-up blocker settings are in the Tools menu of IE and the Firewall is located in the Control Panel's Security Center.
