I have an '02 Dakota. Before I would bring it home I paid about $1200 to have it undercoated and 'Diamond Coated'. I have never washed it except to hose dirt out of the box. I have driven it on back roads, muddy roads, snow and rain as well, dirt, mud, snow etc. just won't stick to it. Since I still don't have my garage built yet, it has been parked outside in the weather for the last 3 years. Here is what it looks like right now. Absolutely no rust or corrosion.
As has been noted here by others 'look after your investment'and it will look after you'!

That again demonstrates my point.

My brother's truck (Dodge Ram 2500)is only two years old. I don't think he's washed it since he bought it and it's got more rust than most I've seen that are ten or more years old. He lives near Kingston ON, so it see's more than its fair share of salt.

Must be made of old Tundras.

herbie herbie:
I need some input, I want a vehicle to haul radio shit up the sides of mountains. Some serious off-roading here. Nothing really heavy to haul.
I was looking at a late 90s Cherokee, but now I have craziest idea:

#1> 1985 Iltis Cdn army Bombardier jeep for sale down south... missed an auction for them 3 years back as I was in surgery on auction day.

#2> 1992 Mitshubshi Kei mini-truck. 660 cc 4x4 pickup.

GF says I'm nutz, but the company is gonna buy what I want cuz the silent partners can STFU, I do all the work.

If you can find an old International Scout get it.

Love to, but owners of those don't part with them. Like the original Broncos.
The oddity of the vehicle is a superb advertising tool, but it needs to be functionality.
Seriously, anyone on the board driven an Iltis or those mini trucks?

Couple years back when things were slow here I had a fallback plan, had a line on an old Divco I wanted to rebuild, paint Candy Apple Red and become a 'Geek on Wheels' in the city. My kids suggested I become a rolling "Computer Tooter" and drew a picture of me in front of a terminal with a huge gas cloud coming out my ass... :D

Something similar to what this hot rodder did to an AM General Delivery truck (Canada Post)...

Some of the old Divco's did not have a driver's seat meaning you had to drive standing up.... Must have been awkward driving....

My dad had one. The fuel line ruptured and sprayed gas all over the hot engine....end of the truck and the first time my dad had sprinted in years.

I take it was the rubber fuel hose which attaches to the fuel filter which broke? Or was it the steel line that ruptured?

Those old Scouts and Broncos are awesome....

Don't get an Iltis.

They suck. If you're looking for ex-military get a Land Rover.

I don't care if you intentionally create an envirement where rust can prosper, that should never happen to a 2007 vehicle.

I gather you didn't read the whole thread, because if you did, you'd of known that FJ is in Hawaii. It looks like the owner has NEVER washed the under-side.

I'll also bet you didn't know that Toyota has an ongoing recall of all 1995 to 2004 Toyota Mini-truck's/Tacoma's, and are either repairing or buying them from the current owners for 150% of black book value.

How about GM and the gas tank problems in 1973 to 87 GM Trucks

Gas Tank Safety in 1973-87 GM Pickup Trucks:

$1:
General Motors has refused to voluntarily recall and retrofit its pickup trucks with saddlebag gas tanks, even though its own internal records and testing experience in other models, and in proto-types, show that it has long mastered the engineering technology to enhance the safety of the gas tanks on these trucks.

I did read the article and I live in Nova Scotia. No ONE year old car or truck I know in Nova Scotia looks like the FJ!!! To dismiss an one year old truck for a rusty frame like that is inexcusable...!!! AND I can't imagine a more harsher environment on vehicles in North America then Atlantic Canada...

Besides how many people wash the underside of their vehicles? Washing the underside would also wash away the undercoating especially some of that heavy WD40 undercoating like Rust Check or Krown....

I guess you didn't watch the ABC Boston 5 news report. Yes Toyota has "offered" to buy these vehicles but if you watch the video there is controversy over Toyota's offer or did you not notice the Toyota owner passing out pamphlets... The truck was too rusty to pass safety inspection or repair but not rusty enough for Toyota to buy back...8O 8O 8O 8O

In the 80s, I remember a recall on toyota cars. the rear suspension arms were rusting out too fast. It looks like toyota hasn't learned their lesson on this one.
