here is an interesting read, not that i support the idea, non the less it is something to consider, because there is the possibility of it happening some day

Canadians are a proud people who abhor the thought that they could ever be vassals to the U.S. But in a recent poll, a surprising 37 percent of them believe that abolishing their national currency could help their country and 77 percent predict a common currency with the U.S. in 20 years. Half see it happening within a decade.

Although market watchers predicted earlier this year that the Canadian dollar would soon be worth 75 U.S. cents, it closed at the end of July at 66 cents. While the nation's economy is strong, Prime Minister Jean Chretien recently nixed the idea of cutting taxes. Higher costs induced by high taxes reduce the value of the Canadian dollar because they lower returns to Canadian investors, economists point out.

Canada taxes capital gains twice as heavily as the U.S. -- and top marginal income tax rates kick in at incomes of only $65,000 Canadian.

Those rates range from 45.6 percent to 54 percent.

Government expenditures there now represent 42.6 percent of gross domestic product -- compared to 31.6 percent in the U.S.

Adopting the U.S. dollar might make sense in light of the fact that Canada's trade with the U.S. has almost tripled since the North American Free Trade Agreement was signed and it now ships 85 percent of its exports to the U.S.
Canada's gold supply -- which just 18 years ago made up 80 percent of its foreign reserves -- now comprises only 5 percent.

Experts think that monetary union with the U.S. would force the government to become competitive with the U.S. on tax, spending and regulatory policies.

But a monetary union would require the U.S. Federal Reserve to add a Canadian seat to its board of governors and Chairman Alan Greenspan has said that the U.S. will never share control of its central bank.

Agreed! If you want a strong currency, adopt the Euro. It was made to compete with the US and that is exactly what is happening. Since 9-11, the US economy has been doing nothing but falling. The eagle is dead, they just don't know it yet.

$1:
Chairman Alan Greenspan has said that the U.S. will never share control of its central bank.

Perfect!

It would be a sad day indeed if canada joined currency with the US dollar.

things need to be done to get our dollar more competitive though.

To maintain our distinct identity, we must maintain our currency. The idea of a common currency with the U.S. (what would they calll it? A Northie?) makes my stomach turn. Incraese trade with Europe. Increase trade with South America. Increase trade with Asia, but DO NOT conform to a common currecny with the U.S.

I fear that one of these days, the Canadian government will sign the papers that will make is even more "Americanised" The US is slowly taking over Canada, and our government just turns their precious little faces around. I presently live in Europe, and everything I see, that I see back at home, is an american product. Canada should be increasing her trade with Europe and decrease the trade with the US. I hope with all my heart that Canada will never become American, but if the dreadful day comes, either I move to Russia or I stay and fight.

You ever hear about the postman who couldn't take the verbal abuse, the whining dogs and all of the other headaches no more?? Up on a watchtower ready to start pegging people off. I hope that we as a nation never get to that point, but certainly the relationship between Canada and the U.S. is getting close to that. If the United States was a woman, we would be grumbling under our breath about all the nagging, her nasty little quirks and how she doesn't put out anymore. Solution: if your woman isn't giving you what you need, sleep elsewhere (aka Europe).

[Please note I'm not advocating adultery, I advocate happiness and a healthier well-being]

U.S. will never go for common dollar
because threir major reason for tariffs on canadian goods is
that we produce goods cheaper because of our cheaper dollar
and with a common dollar they couldn't bitch about that
they would lose hundreds of millions of dollars in tariffs

It would seem that sooner or later some new currency will be adopted by Canada. Our currency is sitting between 62-63 US and in the event that it should go even lower I think the practical reasons for having the Euro or US currency will outweigh the soverign issue. Thing about all the countries in Europe that have the same currency now. It does not effect their independance so the arguement that we would become more American etc. doesn't really work.

It may be 10-20 years...or sooner. But eventually.......
