Well now we have it straight from the Commander of our armed forces!!!!

Seems we are NOT (I REPEAT NOT) in Afgahanistan to defeat the Taliban militarily!!!!

How many of you people knew that? Why are we engaging them in combat then? Is it just for training purposes? Nothing like having a live enemy firing at you for training eh?

This takes the cake!!! And some people don't think we need a debate in parliament to find out exactly what our role is over there SO ALL Canadians can be informed!

This Hillier is really something!!! God I'm even more concerned for our troops now that he has made this statement!!!!!!

http://www.thestar.com/NASApp/cs/Co...72154&t=TS_Home

Reached by phone near Ottawa yesterday, Hillier told the Star he had no disagreement with his minister's statement out of Australia.

"Not at all," Hillier said. "That's never been the strategy — to defeat them militarily."

The general added, "We don't have to defeat them militarily. What we've got to do is build a country."
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Guess we should have sent construction workers instead of soldiers eh?

So were is Mike Holmes on homes when you REALLY NEED HIM EH?

UN FRIGGEN BELIEVEABLE!!! Bring on an election I've heard and seen enough!

We already knew this. Military victory is impossible. We are there to protect the Afghan people and rebuild their country. When we are fighting the taliaban it is not to kill every last one it is to drive them out of areas where we wish to establish the Afghan governments authority and make it easier for reconstruction teams to enter the area.

You really are a retard.

We can't just provide school books and plush stuffed toys because they'd simply be burned by the Taliban. NATO is there to protect the aid workers untill the Afghan people can do it for themselves.

We wouldn't have this conversation if we, the US, would have finished the job when we had the chance. Its funny, we find ourselves saying that time and time again.

He said we don't plan to kill them all, just eliminate them as a military threat, so aid workers can get out into the countryside without needing APCs (and dozens of heavily armed soldiers) to escort them.

The point is that we need to marginalize them.

We need them to be more like muggers (something police can handle) and less like car bombers(something you need the army for), so that we can go out and build schools, dig wells, help the Afghanis build an economy that isn't 95% dependent on opium. There's no point building a school and training teachers if the Taliban show up a day after you leave and burn it down...

If you can't figure that out, you don't have a clue what 'nation-building' is all about. Building security and stability are only a portion of it. Maybe you need to read up on the Canada's '3D' foreign aid policy (defence, diplomacy and development).

Besides, as long as they have a sanctuary in Pakistan, it will never be possible to get rid of them totally.

We were never in Afghanistan to actively seek out and destroy the Taliban and many people know this. We only engage in combat when they attack us or civilians. The AMERICANS are the only ones whos sole mission is to actively seek out and kill Taliban fighters. As others have already stated we are there to provide protection and bring back stability for the people, with the intention of handing responsibility back to the Afghans. So get your head out of your ass and stop trying to peddle your own brand of propaganda.

An exercise in futility.

You can't build a country with a military occupation. This will go down in history as another failure much like Iraq... at the expense of hundreds if not thousands of lives.

The arrogance of this is unbelievable.

Haven't you noticed? The Monkey has learned he can't defend his statements, so he cuts and runs. He's a cut-and-runner. Or maybe a cutter-and-runner? Cutter runner?

Ah, fuck it. Chickenshit is chickenshit.

BTW, Rick Hillier was Chief of Defense Staff under the Liberals too, fucknut!

You really are a moron aren't you!!

We are not an occupying force and never have been. We are there under the INVITATION of the Afghan Government. That is why we are not allowed to fly our own countries flags from every building.
