$1: Justin Trudeau set to enter federal politics: report
CTV.ca News Staff
Justin Trudeau is set to enter federal politics and seek a seat in the Montreal riding of Outremont, according to a report.
Pierre Trudeau's eldest son joined the Liberal riding association in the relatively safe riding of Outremont about two months ago, Montreal's La Presse newspaper reported.
But it appears some Liberals are opposed to the idea of seeing the former prime minister's son run for the seat, the newspaper added.
La Presse reports that Liberal leader Stephane Dion was planning on reserving the riding for high-profile candidates who could help the rebuild the party's support in Quebec.
According to the newspaper, Dion has made it clear to some Liberals that the 35-year-old Trudeau is not the star candidate he was seeking.
The seat is currently held by former transport minister Jean Lapierre, who announced in December that he wouldn't be running in the next federal election.
"Given that I am 50 years old, I told myself it is now or never if I want to have another career..." Lapierre said at the time, insisting his decision had nothing to do with the arrival of Dion.
During the Liberal leadership campaign, Trudeau endorsed Gerard Kennedy after he argued against the House of Commons motion that defines the Quebecois as a nation within a united Canada.
Trudeau also suggested during the campaign that the Liberal party faithful should look beyond the leadership front-runners to younger candidates -- such as Dion and Kennedy.
Once Kennedy dropped out of the running at the Montreal convention in December, however, Trudeau threw his support behind Dion.
When Dion won, Trudeau said the new leader was an inspired choice given the concern he shares with Canadians for the environment.
Outremont has been a federal Liberal stronghold since 1935, except for a single Progressive Conservative win in 1988. Still, Liberal support saw a considerable drop during the time Lapierre held the riding.
Justin's father, former prime minister Pierre Trudeau, represented the adjacent Mount Royal riding from 1965 to 1984. That riding is currently represented by Liberal MP Irwin Cotler.

How much more high profile do you want than someone with the name Trudeau? It might end up for being for the wrong reasons, but still.....

lol
Thats what I was thinking, or is this a birthright thing. Like Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader.
If he has no experience in politics, no education in politics , considering his age. This maybe like feeding someone to the hounds and could very well make even the NDP look tame. Could be fun to watch.

Shit R2, I thought you above all would already know. Once you're in the family, you can't get out...After all, the Mafia is one big happy family and it is a god given right to run in any region you want!
I guess uncle Chretien and he had a good talk and they both agreed that his father's riding was the best way for him to cut his teath in politics. After that they'll groom him for a hit team....and soon enough he'll be in the big times...Cabinet! You know, where the serious money can be pilfered!

At least he's a teacher and not a lawyer like so many politicians tend to be.

I've always hoped Justin would follow into politics, he's personally the kind of person I would vote for. I know politics changes people, but at the moment he seems like a up front, honest person, and that's what we need in this country. Scandals begone.

He's 35 years old. Of course he has qualifications of his own and I expect we'll hear a lot about them if he runs. He's hardly one of those 35 year olds that lives in his mother's basement.

Anything with the name Trudeau attached ends up shit. I look forward to reminding people of his fathers famous greeting to the West in Salmon Arm. Kind of makes me feel warm all over knowing we can bring this little slice of history up again in the political arena.
