So there is an elected MP in this riding, and one was appointed to it instead? Does this count as the conservatives having that riding, and having another MP on their side of the floor?

ridenrain ridenrain:
Now, Here's The Monkey Prince; Dion himself introducing the new "Rightious Indignation line" (tm) for the fall election season.
Available only in Liberal red.

Didn't Dion already scrap riding choices and appoint women candidates?
$1:
Toronto - Liberal leader Stéphane Dion has invoked his power of appointment, naming veteran party activist Michelle Simson as the next Liberal candidate in Scarborough Southwest.

I see you're un-democratic and raise you sexist.
I am not sure if democracy means free choice on who runs, but free choice on who is elected. Poor old Stephan may be able to choose candidates, but not choose who is elected. Actually, Dion choosing the candidates gives the electorate a clear choice between Liberal ideas (or at least those of the current leader) and those of other parties.

Not really.......

BLARE is just spinning and has even got himself confused.

In that riding there is a siting member--a LIBRANO....

The Tory nominee, is acting as a liaison to the government likely because the LIBRANO riding office rebuffs any but the LIBRANO faithful.

Dion is one appointing nominees without input from the riding assn.

So it has no effect on government other then giving the people a direct line to the conservative party with their concerns about the government?

Isn't that enabling democracy not subverting it?

Why are you afraid of democracy, Johnny?
I think he believes that all democratic people have been hit with "the HOCKEY STICK" and therefore part of an international LIBRANO conspiricy to ruin the west!

I remember a Liberal MP in Ontario who refused to help a retired war vet who admitted not voting for the Liberal member. Didn't hear any uproar from the NDP or Libs over that one. That being said I don't see anything wrong here, maybe the Liberal MP won't action any issues being presented by constiuents? Looks like just another means to have your voice heard.

You guys aren't very big on reading, are you? First of all, it's an NDP MP, not a Liberal. Second of all, the Conservatives have previously and vocally praised him for his willingness to do non-partisan work both in his riding and in Ottawa.

The Conservatives...now that there's been an outcry...are now trying to distance themselves from this little debacle and are saying that Dick Harris thought it up all by himself. That's doubtful though, since Harper is noted by everybody (including Conservatives) for keeping tight control over his caucus.

It's fun to see you guys making excuses for Harper though. Maybe you'd like to explain Senator Fortier and why he's not running in a quebec byelection next.

If you would have been listening, you would know that the NDP did indeed speak out about that.

If there was, he/she didn't speak very loud or for very long. Besides I try to avoid listening to the NDP as I'm not fluent in gibberish. 8O

Are you going to answer my question? I'm trying to understand what you are talking about.

Apparently if you didn’t elect one of their candidates, the Conservative government doesn’t really care what you have to say.

At least that was the impression I was left with after reading a news release from B.C. Conservative Caucus chair Dick Harris, which urged people with “concerns or issues with the Federal Government” to contact Sharon Smith, who will be running for the party in the next federal election. Apparently, according to Harris, Smith will provide residents with direct contact to the federal government, which we have not had since 2004, and will “represent constituents of her riding.”

That is quite possibly the most arrogant, ignorant and blatantly misleading thing that I have ever heard from any government or government official. Ever.

$1:
Throwing in the waste bin the principles that make representative government in Canada function, Harris explained on a local radio show the other week: "To have access to the ministers, realistically, you have to be part of the government. You want to contact the Prime Minister's Office or even the prime minister when you need to, it helps immensely to be part of the government."

Maybe PM Steve and his buddy Dick don't think the people have a right to elect their own representative. Maybe PM Steve and his buddy Dick should move to China where this sort of thing is acceptable.

I was talking about this at my riding's nomination meeting and I am disgusted. This riding has a great MP who is always up speaking about issues coming from his riding. I can't get my MP to stand up and speak about anything, he just sits on the back bench and says nothing. If Harper is just going to appoint people why do we eve have elections.

Maybe this MP isn't so great, and isn't presenting issues from everyone in this riding. It's not unheard of for MP's to ignore constiuents who don't wave their party flag(this applies to all parties). Or maybe the NDP supporters equate having 2 ways to contact the government as "subverting democracy" I prefer to think of it as opening up democracy.
