Good column. The only problem I have with it is that it makes the incorrect assumption that anyone in Alberta even gives the remotest shit anymore what Ontario or Quebec think of us. They're old world and dying out. We're new world and our future is just beginning. So fuck 'em if they can't figure out that they don't matter all that much anymore.

Ontarians don't need to "step into the present" to see that Alberta isn't some big redneck outpost. They just have to step into Alberta in the early 1900s to go there. As for us Albertans, when compared to Ontario, we stepped into the future decades ago.

Not only what she mentions, but the first Mosque in North America was in Alberta, and the first all black community, Amber Valley.

But we are just pickup truck driving rednecks. What do we know? Sorry, I have to move the cattle to the north 40 to graze. Back in a fortnight.

That's Vancouver. We're not the West. We should be called the West, but then we'd have to call Alberta, etc, the Hicks Out East. HOEs for short.

Too bad for Alberta then that our public image is that of a cowboy. Nowhere near as cool as Vancouver's trademarked pot-smoking rioting yuppy puppy in a Canucks jersey standing atop a burnt-out police car. It really hurts us to be so terminally unhip!

Nobody plays victim better than Alberta that's for sure - and that's coming from an Albertan who's seen the premier of this province play that card over and over and over again for the past few decades.
