Plenty of support for bilingualism?

$1:
A new CROP poll shows 81 per cent of those surveyed support official bilingualism in Canada and 91 per cent said the prime minister should speak both English and French.

So let's put this to the CKA test and run a poll. I suspect the results will be inverted...

No point in supporting something that will never work.

There's only one bilingual region in this country and its called New Brunswick. Quebec is unilingual, the rest of the country likes to pretend it's bilingual but isn't and because of demographics and what it takes to learn the french language majority never will be.

The sooner the people who wave the bilingualism flag all the time take their reality medication then we can start saving tons of money and put it elsewhere.

Well I for one support it - and at the federal level, too.

Federal hiring practises could maybe benefit from a revamping, though.

Bilingualism is nothing more than lopsided money sucking employment equity program.

The program is a dismal failure and should never have been attempted. One official language works well. English is an universal language. French may be the UN's language of choice, but in reality, English is used more through the world than any other language in business.

This is not to say I don't support a program of multi-language teachings. I just think we as a society have hindred our youth by forcing a bastardized language on them. If a person can speak English, or French, plus an additional language, I see no reason why they can not be labeled bilingual, but in Canada that term is only used for someone who speaks English and French. Everyone else is considered multi-lingual if they speak one of the two primary and another language like German or Chinese. Hardly a fair system.

I agree Streaker. I think if they gave francophones the same written french exam they give anglophones they'd be suprised with the results. Thats one thing to be revamped, amongst others .

If being bilingual is so important why isn't everyone tested in both languages ?

Nope Bilingualism is blatant discrimination, it allows those who speak French (because they were born in Ontario or Quebec) special status regarding Federal Jobs. French Military officers get preferential treatment in promotions because they speak french, some can't speak English thou. I think it should be up to the provinces to decide if it wants to be bilingual.

Are they qualified? Can they server both official languages?

If those two criteria are meet, know problem.

You interested in working for the Government, I suggest French Emerson.

Now personally I have no love affair with the French, I think in many ways they are selfish and very anti-Canadian.

But I do like Putin and Donairs
