Once again the Liberals do a lot of barking and no biting.
Controversial Tory changes to immigration act set to pass final Commons voteOTTAWA - Controversial changes to Canada's immigration act are set to pass their final hurdle in the House of Commons.
The changes will allow Immigration Minister Diane Finley to fast-track skilled immigrants of her choosing, while making it more difficult for others to get in. Critics say the measures will put too much discretionary power in the hands of the minister.
The Conservative legislation won't be voted down despite vocal opposition from a majority of Canada's elected representatives in Parliament.
That's because the Stephen Harper government has included the immigration changes - which would normally merit their own legislation - in a finance bill that implements the federal budget.
The only way to stop the immigration changes would be to kill the budget bill, topple the government and spark a summer election campaign, something the Liberal party says it's not prepared to do at this time. (full story)
