Canadian Auto Workers president Buzz Hargrove has given Jack Layton his marching orders: keep supporting Paul Martin's government, at any price:

Mr. Hargrove, who heads the Canadian Auto Workers union, said yesterday that a number of issues are still waiting to be dealt with, including health care and a need to increase protection for pensioners.

"I don't think bringing down the government makes any sense," he said yesterday. "We should try to make the government work . . . there's just too much to be done to force an election."

No surprise that a big union boss is perfectly comfortable propping up a corrupt government with its hand in the till.

The problem, however, is that no one has figured out just what's so important for the Liberals to deal with that we can't have an election at this time. Not even the Liberals.

The oft-repeated mantra that "Canadians don't want an election at this time" is misleading at best and an outright lie at worst. Most people don't want an election at any time, any more than they want a root canal. Yet both procedures are necessary at the time and afterwards, people feel better for having gone through with them.

Moreover, who is inconvenienced by holding an election, other than the people who work on them? Elections aren't like snow storms: they don't block highways, shut down businesses and leave people trapped inside their homes.

The only people who don't want an election, once they think about what the question means, are the people who fear to face judgment.

But then, the Liberals have always mistaken themselves for the voice of the Canadian people.

That's funny, I don't want an election at this time! We're gonna replace one minority incapable government with another. there are more important things to worry about in the next coming months, Xmas, Kwanza, you know the important things. If anything the politicans should actually have to work for a living. personally i found it highly entertaining watching the Liberals, NDP, and Conservatives WORK at budget time. It was government working the way it was supposed to, give and take, not ram it through. My biggest fear with an election is that Canada gets a repeat of what BC did a few years ago, we replaced the NDP with Mr. dictator i mean Campbell, at all costs, and did'nt really look at what we were doing.

The province is doing pretty well, under Mr. Dictator.
I'm definately going to be voting again for Mr. Dictator.

No one wants an election but how snivelly can folks get. It takes 15-20 min. and costs nothing. What, 40% of folks don't even bother.

Yeah, comrade.
Because the guy who mops the hospital floor needs to be paid $30 an hour. The teachers union should be reading some of their anti-bully pamplets because they need to figure out if they want to be a labor union or a political party.

Better ramp up for the general strike during the Olympics. That'll really get people to like you all.

At least that $30/hr is worth it, is your MLA worth their salary? We were so pissed off at the NDP that we voted Campbell in not once but twice. You mention a general strike. How would you like to be told, your stuck making your salary forever. It's pathetic, campbell is anti average guy, in evry form, and folks like yourself just coax him along
