Paris — Parti Québécois Leader Bernard Landry vowed on Monday to devote the rest of his political life towards realizing the sovereignty of Quebec.
The former premier refused to comment on a recent public opinion poll suggesting that a majority of Quebeckers hope he quits as party leader. Mr. Landry faces a confidence vote at the PQ convention in June 2005. Some party insiders expect Mr. Landry to step down before that meeting to pave the way for a leadership contest.
The Opposition Leader made the comments in Paris after he received the French Legion of Honour “in recognition of his distinguished efforts to bring together” France and Quebec.
French Prime Minster Jean-Pierre Raffarin personally presided over the ceremony at his official residence naming Mr. Landry a commander of the order.
“You have enhanced the relationship between France and Quebec and we want to express our deep gratitude to you,” Mr. Raffarin told Mr. Landry.
The French Prime Minister said the Quebec leader is “a model of consistency in that commitment.”
Mr. Landry, 67, responded by reaffirming his determination to work hard towards the realization of sovereignty.
“All the rest of my political life will be marked by the desire to achieve this dream,” he said after wishing that the co-operation between Quebec and France ends with a “reunion at the United Nations.”
In departing the ceremony, Mr. Landry said he was convinced that “that will be accomplished relatively soon.”

My Goodness!
What’s the matter with you Deancoo?
Does every little thing have to be so perfect for you? Be thankful for what he is doing, showing you an article that could of been an interest to you.
In every single post does it really have to have ones own opinion in it?
Please Deancoo show some discipline.
And thank you very much human for sharing that article with us.
BTW: I know we are supposed to settle disputes in another board but I just wanted to quickly point this out to him.

Deancoo,
Human can be a little off the wall with his Arab paranoia stuff but I'm siding with him this time. This post is a marvel.
This individual is a traitor to Canada. Why would you want to break away from a country like Canada and run into the arms of a country like France?
Quebec can effectively enhance ties to France without leaving Canada. Quebec citizens are free to do whatever they wish in this bi-lingual country. Francophones can function in most provinces relatively well. Separating from Canada is not only a ridiculous idea but it borders on insanity.
And.. Why the hell hasn't Canada sent a warning to France to stop meddling in our affairs?

I'm going to side with optinum on this one. I just don't see the harm in the French gov't giving Bernie Landry some award! Big deal! I know that this may look like the French gov't is being disrespectful of Canada, but there are other things that France does that should be of much greater concern to us than this medal thing.
I do agree with mcpuck that it would be nice if Canada would be firmer with France regarding its meddling in Canadian affairs, though.

In September 1999, French President Jacques Chirac visited Iqaluit, in Nunavut. He delivered the usual Hallmark-card speeches about France's great friendship with Canada during this visit.
At the same time that this was happening, a submarine was spotted surfacing in Canadian waters in the arctic, not far from Iqaluit. Although it cannot be established with absolute certainty, the concensus among experts is that it was a French submarine. Needless to say, France had not asked for Canada's permission to sail its submarine into Canadian waters.
Ah France....some great friend....
Of course, the Canadian gov't response to this was to try and sweep it under the rug....I suppose we'll never learn....

In order to conduct a further discussion on this topic, either improve your English or learn proper grammer(talking about the other guy).Either way you do realize that giving an award to a person who wants to "destroy'' the country is a VERY big deal and it also shows disrespect to this country. And what do we care what OTHER things France does???

You mean you aren't bothered by French submarines in Canadian waters?!? France's violation of Canadian sovereignty?!? Look, I'm not ecstatic about Landry getting this award, it looks like France is giving its tacit support to the Quebec separatist movement (besides, Landry's a prick), but this whole thing is merely symbolic. I say let 'em have their mutual-masturbation ceremony at the Elysee Palace if its what makes 'em happy.
I agree with you that Optinum's English isn't all that great, but seeing his Quebec nationalist/separatist perspective on this is worthwhile, so I hope he keeps posting at CKA in the future.
