Keeping the nightmare alive..

$1:
Liberals, NDP, Bloc sign deal on proposed coalition
'We must try to make this Parliament work,' Dion says of accord
Last Updated: Monday, December 1, 2008

The Liberals and New Democrats signed an agreement on Monday to form an unprecedented coalition government, with a written pledge of support from the Bloc Québécois, if they are successful in ousting the minority Conservative government in a coming confidence vote.

The accord between parties led by Stéphane Dion, Jack Layton and Gilles Duceppe came just hours after Liberal caucus members agreed unanimously that Dion would stay on to lead the Liberal-NDP coalition, with support in the House of Commons from Bloc MPs.

Yep. They made this coalition on the basis that they wanted Mr.Harper to work with them more.

The past year has proved one thing: with the exception of maybe Mr.Layton, the opposition has ZERO intention of working towards a functional government and every intention to try and handcuff it at every opportunity with any faux scandal it can muster.

If Steve hadn't called a holiday during the financial crisis, the nightmare would be over by now.

Sorry about that. Next up I'll be solving the worlds energy problems, and working on world peace in the evenings. That should make up for it.

Yes, there were surpluses under Chretien, but keep in mind a few things:

- The entire global economy was relatively healthy throughout the majority of Chretien's time in office (unlike now, where everyone has been hit by a pretty significant recession, one that's lasted a long time.)

- Chretien also benefited from interest rates that were much lower than Mulroney had to contend with.

- Much of Chretien's work in reducing the deficit involved cutting various types of funding to the provinces (even more than Mulroney did). So, in effect, he was 'passing the buck'

Mulroney was not our greatest PM, but I think there have been a lot of unfair comparisons in his handling of the debt when compared to Chretien.

Not a factor. Interest rates were high, but so was inflation. High inflation erodes debt.
