Blondie is a must. Even though the 80s was my time, a lot of the music isn't what I would call 'classic' rock. The Beach Boys, The Stones, Led Zepplin, Pink Floyd and some others were major cultural icons that helped shape the generations. Now music - Rock.....is much more diversified. What is country now a days could once have passed for Rock in my mom's time. Country is itself more mainstream now.

Freebird, Sultins Of Swing are two taht stand out for me as being timeless

but there's the classics too, Johnny Cash, early Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis... Motown is also huge..

Now before you all crucify me for my choices, I am a reformed rocker, I listened to CHOM here in Montreal all through the 70's, 80's and 90's and just can't anymore. If I hear Geddy Lee's voice one more time I think I'm going to shoot myself.

I very much still enjoy the Beatles, Stones and Rod Stewart. As for the rest. I'm giving them a rest and moving on.

from what i understand she already does chose her own music and he's jsut trying to broaden her horizons and see where the music from today comes from, which anyone who loves music should do.

I buy my daughter I-tunes cards and as a price, I make her download and listen to a song that I believe is a classic. Not a huge price when 1/25 songs are something you didn’t choose.

Some background: She takes dance and wants to sing (woe is me..)
I’m a huge Guilbert & Sullivan fan so she’s seen Mikado and Pirates live
She’s also seen Oklahoma, The Music Man . We’re going to West Side Story at the end of this month.
She also grew up watching Blues Brothers so US R&B is also on the list. Can you spell R.E.S.P.E.C.T.?

My question is: What songs from the 60’s 70’s 80’s do you feel are a solid foundation.
If you were me. What would you recommend?

Top of my list is Pink floyd: Run, .. Or carefull with that axe Eugene

Yup, exactly what I was going to say after reading the start of this thread. Jack Black knows Rock. For sure.

You may not want to rent her Jack Black's other rock movie though. Stay away from The Pick of Destiny if you're looking for good family type values...

You just haven't heard any good hip hop. The trash they've been playing in the Top40 for the past twenty years mostly doesn't count.

Expose her to all types of music, different genres and styles...check out indi bands as well. There is alot of outstanding talent out there, that refuses to sell out to make a buck. Even if you dont like the music, there may be something in it she can pick up on and run with. Music is a very individual thing...well for folks that have the passion. She will find her niche...we all do

BTW...good on you for encouraging her dream, not many parents do
