Why do you think Quebec nationalism became so popular in the 1960s?

It was popular long before the 1960s.

A better question would be why the separatist movement took off at the time.

Internal Quebec politics (the antiquated nature of the Union Nationale and Duplessis, modernization, industrialization and urbanization pressure, unionism and nationalization of corporations – like Levesque’s Hydro-Quebec) and demographics were the driving force behind the emergence of the socio-political changes in this period.

True... but don't forget the oppression of the RC church and its role in the political climate of Quebec.

The control of business and industry by the Americans, especially in the pulp and paper industry was also cause for rebellion. My mother told me that she couldn't get a job in Montreal ( she was well educated) because she didnt speak English.
The history is very interesting and there are many books written that shed light on the current issues in Quebec. The Quiet Revolution is worth reading as is Yesterday the children were dancing by Gratien Gélinas. If more people were informed of the oppression french speaking Quebec have experienced the better understand of why the separatist movement evolved. It is at it were a turning of the tables so to speak.

Hence my use of the term "modernization"
