The short answer is that Americans consider the war of 1812 as a victory because our underfunded educational system teaches half truths. The school system teaches that our young nation survived and repelled a British invasion. And that's why we "won."

Also I lay some of the blame on Ice Road Truckers.

What they don't teach is that the British never intended to reconquer the United States, just slap us around a bit. They also fail to mention the several failed attempts to invade Canada. One of the earlier posts hit the reason for this on the head. We don't like to challenge the notion that our military is invincible.

If I had to make a list of the losers in the War of 1812, the United States would be on it. But the US is not on the bottom of the list. To me, the biggest losers were the Native Americans. They lost Tecumseh, any hope of unity, and ultimately trust of the U.S. government. Imagine Tecumseh with a unified NA force fighting Andrew Jackson in any of the Indian Wars. It would be a different set of conflicts.

Also, the CFL sucks.

Belgium??? WTF happened in Belgium?

The Signing of the Treaty of Ghent the author says there is a plaque there in Lovendeghem Mansion in the rue des Champs, Ghent, Belgium.

Since the book is called a Guide Book To The Historic Sites Of The War Of 1812 I can only guess that he thought it only fitting that this be the last site.

I dunno he had to end it some place? [huh]

Not to make too much of a point here but as this site is crock full is anal retentive history nerds, wasn't Ghent in the Netherlands at the time?

Thanks! Looking forward to dumping all over The History Channel and the CFL on a regular basis!
