The problem with this:

Image

is that it's largely indistinguishable at 30 paces from the flag of Bermuda.

Or Manitoba. Or Ontario. Or any other piddly crown colony.

Manitoba and Ontario based their flags off the red ensign in protest of the new maple leaf flag. A big maple leaf is ugly if you ask me and looks worse flying on a ship. The red ensign at least represents Canada more and has more meaning. It has the Union flag which comprises of the Saints George, Patrick, and Andrew. It is a symbol of our British ties and our Christian heritage. It has our Coat of Arms which represents our military history as well as our founding races England, Scotland, Ireland, and France. Also three maple leaves which shows the importance of nature to Canada. The backdrop is red which represents the blood that has been sacrificed for our country. Even the fact it is an ensign shows the importance of the sea to Canada. A country without its history has no future and the maple leaf flag does not honour any of our history. It was created by those who were ashamed of our history and for political gains. The Canadian Red ensign is truly a Canadian flag and one that represents Canada.

I agree with the majority it would seem, Maple Leaf it is.
The Red Ensign really never said "Canada". The Maple Leaf has been a Canadian symbol for hundreds of years and it adorns the uniforms of the CEF in WW1, good enough for me.

Although I rather like the "Queens Colour" that Regiments in the CF carry. Has a bit of the old country still there.

Here's the Queen's Colour of the Royal Highland Regiment of Canada.

The maple leaf is one of the few flags of the world you can draw in under 10 seconds that everyone in the world will recognize. Now that's street cred.

Funny that you include this, and also very telling.

Look at the guy. He's supposed to be the typical Canadian. In a kilt, for pete's sake.

Now, I actually like kilts, and wear one from time to time.

But I don't think anyone today would consider a kilt the Canadian national dress. It may have been, when "Canada" consisted of 600,000 Scots Presbyterian farmers in Ontario, but that Canada is long gone.

That flag went wherever that guy in the kilt went, ---some obscure hole in the memory of man.

Actually, the Maple Leaf represents Canada – the Canada of today, the post-war Canada that emerged successfully from arguably history’s darkest hour as a main contributor to the defeat of totalitarianism. The Red Ensign was a flag that represented a different era (Canada at one point had the royal arms of the King of France as our official symbol) – one that was true to its British roots, but it reflected a different era and one where Canada was either a British colony or quasi-sovereign political entity. Those days are over and so is their symbolism.

Besides, there was always a degree of confusion regarding our “national flag” anyway. The Red Ensign was sometimes flown above government buildings whereas in WWI, the Union Jack was flown in regards to Canadian forces. In many respects, this lack of symbolic cohesion hinders your assertion. I respect my heritage, but I use dome degree of perspective when evaluating it and applying it in a contemporary setting. There is no need for a new flag, your opinion notwithstanding.

Lastly, whether you like the new flag or not is immaterial. It’s our flag and it’s a proud symbol of our nation – one that no longer has colonial ties. I hardly consider Pearson or Stanley ashamed of his nation’s history– perhaps you need to study up on our history instead of misrepresenting it.

It is a military uniform. Well 15% (5 million people) of Canada is of Scottish origin probably even higher if you include those who call themselves Canadian. In the highland regiments you still see kilts usually worn for more ceremonial purposes now. The average population in Scotland doesn't wear kilts either does that mean Scotland is long gone? Or they should change their flag? Changing a flag because people don't wear kilts anymore doesn't seem like a very good reason to me.

I serve under the Maple Leaf, but being a mil history buff I will always have soft spot for the Red Ensign, the flag that so many Canadians fought and died under.

I congratulate mspurrell for reminding us all of a grand old flag. PDT_Armataz_01_34
