Hi, this is my first post so please be gentle. :D

I'm a fairly young american, who is considering living in Canada for a year or so. Maybe longer if I really like it.

Before I ask my questions I explain a little bit about myself.

My name is Jake and I live in the rocky mountain area of colorado. I have recently graduated highschool and am capable of higher education (here at least), but have considered living in canada for a few reasons.

My main interests in life are music which is a huge part of my life, metal, playing drums (i play in 2 bands), hiking, mountains, snowboarding, playing hockey (highschool varsity and club allstars this year), education, travel, reading, hanging out ,joking with friends and much more.

Some of my favorite bands include Hate Eternal, Kamelot, Strapping Young Lad, Mayhem, Emperor, Into Eternity, Bathory, Burzum, Voivod, Blind Guardian, Kataklysm, Behemoth, Cryptopsy, Nile, Naglfar, Amon Amarth, Isengard, Dark Throne, Stratovarius, Gorgoroth, Lynchmob, Dokken, Queensryche, Dream Theater, Sepultera, Carnage, Ceremonial Castings, Vital Remains, Grave, Immortal, Celtic Frost, Hellhammer, Venom, Carpathian Forest, Dimmu Borgir, Inquisition, Judas Priest, Yngwie Malmsteen, and loads more.

(yes, I listen to metal but I'm not a satanist or anything like that)

I don't know what any preconcieved notions of Americans here are but I myself am not and or do not--

-loud..I try not to be.
-Forcefull with opinions.
-a Drunk.. I don't drink actually, not for moral reasons or anything. I cant. Body doesn't cope well with it.
-drug user. It's not my thing.
-a person who listens to rap or emulates 'thug culture'. I strongly dislike it actually.
-celebrity obsessed. I could care less, really.
-struggling with an ethnic identity crisis.
-extreme left bleeding heart liberal, or a loud mouthed conservative.
-offended by different ideas or thoughts.
-overweight or out of shape
-eat fastfood to the point of having a problem. once or twice a month I'd guess.

I do have a problem with people who don't assimilate, and force themselves culturaly on others.

Ok, that lengthy into is done, onto the questions.
_____________________________________________________________________________________

How do Canadians feel about immigration. How do YOU feel about immigration?

What are some customs, and cultural habits of Canadians? I'd love to hear anything about that. Anything from slang, to passtimes or anything else. The more the better.

What are some major differences between America and Canada?

Would the Canadians here consider canada a more social and laid back environment than America? or the other way around?

that should do it. for now.

Thanks a billion! If anyone has any questions I'd be more than happy to answer.

It's all well and good to say your going to live in Canada, but if you are a young person just out of highschool living in the U.S. I say your chances are slim in getting a visa.

You'll find the opinions on all those questions are as varied as the people in both our countries are - the only way you're going to find these out is if you decide to come here yourself

I have no idea what the process involves, but I'd suggest finding out how you can apply to universities in Canada and see where it goes.

Hi, Welcome to the board :P

From what I read in your post, you'd fit right in ;-) (like anybody else, for that matter :P)

What you could do, is apply for a working-holiday visa. That means you can work for a year, any job that would hire you, but you don't have to.

You could also try for a student visa, but I guess you need to have a school to go to.

Everything about visa can be found here:

www.cic.gc.ca

Good luck!

You live in the Rocky Mountain area of Colorado....stay there... the grass is not always greener in someone else's back yard.

Higher taxes, colder weather..there is no real big difference between Canadians and Americans. You're perceptions are tainted by your youth and inexperience.

these things can also apply to Canadians

"-loud..
-a Drunk..
-drug user.
-a person who listens to rap or emulates 'thug culture'.
-celebrity obsessed.
-struggling with an ethnic identity crisis.
-extreme left bleeding heart liberal,
-offended by different ideas or thoughts.
-overweight or out of shape
-eat fastfood to the point of having a problem. "

The main difference is our taxation is higher and we do have universal medicare. We have a bit of a problem with bleedingheart liberals but so does the US. One of your biggest problems will be ours---trying to figure out what a Canadian is.

Believe it or not an exterminator, hired to rid an appartment building of pigeons was convicted of animal cruelty because 4 pigeons died in his live-traps....but then the US has that shit too.

Boy, aren't you the encouraging bunch! :P

Com'on ahead young man. I don't think you'd ever be sorry you came to Canada to live. You'll love it here and I would encourage you to come to Canada's stirring economic giant, The Province of Saskatchewan.

Many of our young people are attending school in the US so nothing should prevent you from attending University here. WE have some of the most beautiful lakes and wilderness areas in all of WEstern Canada. Both Saskatoon and Regina Saskatchewan have great Universities. Take a serious look at this Province. WE are on the cusp of being the fastest growing Province in the country. The future lies here! Natural resources we haven't even thought of developing yet.

Brenda has given you a great site to access more information. Come to Canada. Come to Saskatchewan. You'll never regret it. [flag]

calgary is the hot spot with warm climate and close to the mountains. Depends what you want for a job. House prices are pretty high now in western canada but plenty or work. If you have a good degree no problem getting a job. Stay away from eastern canada they are in a recession.

That's the first time I've ever heard Calgary described as warmer than most of Canada. It wasn't when I lived there.
