Not sure about the original premise of this thread... Putin is the Times cover girl...
But, regarding Bush.
The American Presidency is a little bit of a paradox. Almost no mortal being can truely represent almost 300 million people with any coherence. However, we don't hire Mensa types or look for other super human types either. The paradox is that a reasonably intelligent, prudent person can be qualified for the job. My personal preference is for a Senator or Congressman to run for the job.
Bush is almost not intelligent or prudent. He was not a senator or congressman, but probably shook hands with some. Bush could not pronounce the word nuclear or tell you much about any foreign leaders. Yet he is intensely engaged in foreign affairs with no background whatsoever, except that his father was prez. Bush made a blunder with invading Iraq, mostly because he cut corners and forced the issue in an unprofessional manner, not befitting the consensus type of government we should have. Almost as bad as Lyndon Johnson personally picking bombing targets, Bush bullied his military into bad moves.
Now, I am a pretty conservative person and I just have to scratch my head about Bush... the way he went comatose when Katrina happened. Not very presidential. I would have sent our military to pick up people out of the water in a nano-second.
Bush is a bad caricature of a political hack, who simply hands out important positions to really bad toadies. He played the Southern Christians like a fiddle. Our best hope is that he does almost nothing until he is out of office. At least he could have hired smart, good people, like Colin Powell (who got the hell out at first chance). He hired Condy Rice as Sec of State, but she was an expert in Soviet relations... her expertise was moot after the end of the cold war.
Where do we go from here? We need to hire a reasonably intelligent, prudent person with experience in the Senate or Congress who can work with the other intelligent, prudent persons in the world.
