I know this is going to seem like a really wacky question to you, Warhawk, but why would they attack us? We were trading quite happily with the USSR. The Japanese went to war with the US over trade issues...they were like a couple of dope dealers in a turf war.

Exactly what has the US been protecting us from? The domino theory was shown to be a masturbatory fantasy before Vietnam even ended, Canada has few, if any, enemies. So what the hell are we being protected from? Ourselves? Thanks, but we get along just fine, little buddy.

Empires expand, duh!

Tell that to the Cambodians.

I'm sure the Polish felt the same way.

Cambodia...Hmmm, the US government thought Pol Pot was a wonderful human being for a while. Of course they gave Ho Chi Min a passle of guns 'n money back in WWII too. Strange bedfellows? More like incompetent bastards.

Empires don't just expand, they also collapse. Yours is showing all the usual signs of being on the verge of such a collapse. Excuse me if I spark you leaders up in effigy instead of genuflecting to their twisted images.

Rev just once I would love to see you say something nice about the States..
Cold day in hell I am sure.
Ho Chi Min was fighting the Japanese during WW2.The States also gave Stalin a ton of equipment so much even He was impressed by the American War machine.(Must hurt a hero of yours saying nice things about the U.S)
Ho Chi Min was deemed the enemy when some idiots thought it would be better to keep France happy and send advisors to help them in Vietnam.Ike sent some, then Kennedy sent more than Johnson sent everything.
But not the point.
I think they are great neighbors. We may not like the way they do some things but they donot like the way We do some. The States may act like spoiled brats when they don't get their own way but it is no diffrent than when we do not get ours.

Ok, to go along with the start of this thread I think I'll add my two cents worth.

Instead of doing what our favorite patient thinks we should do, I say we dollow the Chinesse lead and build a huge wall. I say we build The Great Wall of Canada, right along our boarder with the US to keep the infadels out. Just for you Perogi Man we'll put Victoria on the US side of the wall, it will still be in Canada, but you can keep close to your infadel roots. The wall will be just brick on the US side, but we'll paint mountains and stuff on our side so it looks more like God intended. A 100 foot tall wall stretching from coast to coast, come on sing with me..... "This land is my land, this land is your land........."

Rich neighbors are good neighbors are they not ;)?

Actually, I see the US less like neighbors and more like our brothers. The US and Canada are brothers-- similar as we come from the same family, but different as brothers can be very different. Brothers share, but brothers are also independent. If your brother says "whoa... those people over there really need some help and I think together we could make a difference!" of course we'll help out. If your brother says "Oh no! Someone punched me and some refugees need a place to crash for a bit..." of course we'll help.

But, if you brother says "Hey! I need some cash so I can go beat up a guy over there", you're not going to help unless you feel that "guy" deserves it. If your brother says "Hey, let me string this missle shit all over your room, it'll help protect us both!" you're gonna say "dude!! No way! Get the fack out! This is MY room!"

That's the way I see the US anyway ;) We still love our brothers :)

Hmm, I don't see how people can say that Japan or the USSR would have never attacked Canada, and that the US was not a deterrent to those attacks. If you look at the history in the pacific war, the Japanese held numbers of Canadians in Prison camps, and even had countries under control such as the Korea and China. If Japan would take over and kill/keep prisoner tons of countries which could be looked at as closer to them historically than Canada, who's to say they wouldn't want to take over North America? Germany and Japan were all for making empires, and you have to wonder what would have happened if the Soviet Union had obtained the bomb first, ended the war, and maybe turn on their western allies in a way to spread the "communist revolution" accross the world. While the US is not innocent, I don't see how people can not even imagine that the US might have been a deterrant or some sort of help to the world(Canada and Europe included)during the cold war and World War 2. This is not to say that Canada did not help both in the war in the pacific and the war in Europe, but Japan, given the ability, or even Germany, I think, would have tried to take over North America if there was not a major deterrant which was fighting them back on their homelands. You can also say that the United States was attacked because of their trade policies towards those countries, but did not Japan commit terrible war crimes in China, or Nazi Germany commit war crimes and attack many countries accross Europe which might have provoked certain policies towards them?

I agree, there's no way you can say "this NEVER could have happened". The war was so complicated, ANYTHING could have happened in a different turn of events.

However, as much as I love the true north strong and free, during WWII it seems to me that Canada was still globally viewed as part of Britain. Hence if anyone was going to the American front, they'd probably conquer a US location first as they were the most refreshed in the battle. Whether or not they *then* would have gone on to Canada depends on how long it would take, or if at all, they could beat back the Americans.

Here we go again with the “what ifs”. Nobody’s saying the Japs or the Soviets would not have attacked Canada. Heck anything could have happened if we had written history differently. But as it stands, they had no reason to. The point is the US is the super power in North America that's pissing everyone off, so if someone wants to attack North America, I doubt it would be because they had a vendetta against Canada. The Canadians have fought side by side with us in every war that wasn't illegal and they've told us they won't be a part of the ones that were. If you ask me, that's integrity right there. What do they still need to kiss our ass for? The big military power that the US has to protect itself from the people it pisses off? puh-lease  It’s pretty obnoxious for someone to come start some crap about Canada needing to be grateful for all the protection the US is providing for itself. Sorry, but that's BS

I wasn't saying anyone should kiss the US's ass. I mean, I can be grateful to having Canada as a neighbor because they they are peaceful with the US. What, would you want Iraq as your neighbor with Saddam as the leader? As much as the US attacks and pisses off other countries, not for a 100 or more years have we had that terrible of a time with Canada. My whole point was imagine a world war 2 environment with the United States out of the picture, because you all were stating how Japan would have never attacked Canada. If you people can say that the Soviets would have never done this, and Japan would have never done that, why can't I say it was possible? It's funny that I say we never know, and that they could have attack Canada without the US being there, and then you come telling me how I shouldn't talk about hypotheticals, when the whole "Japan would have never attacked Canada" is in fact a hypothetical. Peaceful, none threatening nations have been attacked throughout history. I thought the whole point of this post was being grateful to the Americans in the fact that Canada was never attacked and didn't have to worry much about it because of the fact that the US was there. By no means should Canadians kiss Americans asses, but can't people be greatful in some respects, and angry in others? I mean, if any country attacked Canada, and Americans saw people who they can in some ways relate to dying, you have to know we would be there to help. Isn't it something to be greatful of that you have a country beside you who would help you out if ever a time of extreme need came?

I was saying that no one can say ANYTHING for certain, those were turbulent times. It is highly unlikely that would have happened. So should we be grateful that the US was there to potentially safeguard us from this hypothetical yet unlikely situation? Probably not.

Should we be grateful in general to have the US as neighbors? Probably-- like you said we could have someone much more belligerent. Should we bend over and say "Oh! Great United States! You can do no wrong! I love you so! Thank you for shielding us with your missles and POWAHFUL American Dollah!!!" um... no. Should the United States bend over and say "Oh! Great CANADA! You have wonderful natural resources, thank you for trading with us and being soooo peacefulll!!!!" no.

Should both sides just quit their bitchin'? hehe

Nobody states the obvious positives. Of *course* the US is a good neighbor (um... in a relative context). Of course we are mutually grateful. What is there to discuss? Only the negatives :O
