PJB PJB:
History question for ya..

Which country was the first to be populated by Europeans?

A. Canada

B. The United States

C. Mexico

D. None. All of the above were already populated when Europeans first arrived. The USA is technically the correct answer as applies to Europeans as Fort Augustine predates the Spanish outposts in Mexico. But then Canada is also correct if you consider the failed Viking settlements about Newfoundland and PEI.

If a plane crashes on the border between the USA and Canada, where do bury the survivors?

Depends on whether you do it in the USA or Canada and if you prefer life in jail as opposed to the death penalty.

If by “European” you mean culturally and temporally, not necessarily geographically or ethnically (that would eliminate Kennewick controversy and other Paleo-Indian fossil debates) then Viking settlements represent the best-documented (read: archaeologically verified and that eliminates St. Brendan) “settlement” in North American, or Canada – specifically L’Anse aux Meadows ca. 1008 BCE.

If you mean, “populated” as in “colonization” or permanent settlement or inhabitants then Cortes’ Mexico invasion (and subsequent war with Moctezuma produced Spanish settlements) began in 1519. Cartier’s first true attempt French settlement in 1541 probably represents the closest thing to answering your question – and Champlain’s Port Royal beachhead (1605) and Quebec (1608) represent the truest colonization attempts (in addition to Virginia in 1607).

So, a quick summary:

1. First Populated Country: in simplest terms, "Canada" by Norse in 1008 ca. BCE (that dismisses current debate over Kennewick)

2. First Settlements: Mexico by Cortes – Columbus reached major landfall in Caribbean and Central American and question asked for specifically Canada, United States or Mexico. St. Augustine does not predate Cortes’ settlements in Mexico. A bad example of American-centric thinking.

3. First Colonization – New Spain – ca. 1525 – that also predates St. Augustine.

Mustang wasn't L’Anse aux Meadows settled in 1000(1001) BCE and colonized for 8 years until they left?

The archaeological information I’ve seen claims a temporal date of ca. 1008 BCE for definite, collaborated timeframe for L’Anse aux Meadows (see Dickason and Brune). It is also inferred from the absence of a midden and the lack of evidence of “house” rebuilding that the occupation was anything more than a few years (so, if that intimates 3-4 and you say 8, I’d say we’re all on the same page).

Here is a question that seems to pop up on damn near every American/Canadian thread and it demands the facts. When I say facts I mean actual historical facts and not just us versus them bullshit.

During the war of 1812 the British did overrun Washington and they did attempt to burn down the Whitehouse but, and here is the kicker. Were they representing Britain or Canada?

They fought under the Union Jack, but everynam there, was either Born in upper/lower Canada, or were going to be Canadians in a very short time.
And yes it torched and burned to the ground
