Of course the Canadians would simply just agree with this, hey it's for the good of security eh? Ah heck, they already got the border armed, coasts, choppers in the air, prospect of a wall from sea to sea, why not add the great lakes to the list?
Canada 'reserves' the right to do the same but of course they never will. Might make the Americans....concerned like in the north.

A treaty between who besides the US & Canada? We would have a pretty strong case considering the river travels directly through the heart of Canada and we could justifiably make it a security issue.
The states, while demanding other nations respect the 10 mile off-shore limit to territory are very bad when it comes to their waters. Would they have ever let a soviet battlegroup conduct drill outside the 10 mile limit in the gilf of mexico?

Ahhh the CBC right on the ball as per normal. We did a Lakes tour this past summer and the USCG boats that provided port security for us in Cleveland, Detroit and Chicago were all armed with 60's. This is news? Don't ever recall seeing a USCG vessel that was not armed except USCGS Eagle.
Matter of fact I do recall seeing another armed vessel in the Lakes last summer....us. 50 cal HMG, 6 pounder saluting guns, Sea Sparrow SAMs, Harpoon ASM, 20mm phalanx and 57mm Bofors. A tad more than a couple lousy little 60's.
Sit back and take a bloody breather.

You wouldn't happen to have a name for this vessel other than "us", would you?
