I saw this sign on one of the stores today and it's a first for me.I asked the teller why they dont take American funds and she said they only get 95 cents for one dollar so it's not worth it.
There was a hint of a smile on her face as she told me this.
Has anyone else seen this happening around?
This was a liquor store and they dont seem to worried about pissing off American tourists.

Same gas station accepted my Can dollars in April.

Use Canadian currency in Canada.

Use American Currency in the US.

American money is not legal tender in Canada. Businesses accept it at their convienence, so its nothing to be really shocked about.

Its the same with Canadian dollars in the US, hell these days you are better off converting your currency to USD before you go to the US because retailers have highway robbery exchange rates (between 80 and 95 cents USD) considering our dollar is worth a few cents MORE than theirs.

In regards to Zig's question, I haven't seen anything like that, but I've heard plenty of "look, someone gave me an American quarter" with a reply along the lines of "Well it's worth less now" types of jokes.

I live near Point Roberts, a small community whose only land access is via Canada. The population is mostly Canadian, and they rely heavily on Canadian business. When the dollar was at its lowest, several business advertised Canadian dollas at par, which always made me wonder what their American clientele thought.

How the hell did they make any money? I'm interested in how they covered their costs, perhaps they purchased their inventory from Canadian rather than American suppliers?

I did a snowmobile trip to Yellowstone and they hit me for allmost 50 cents on the dollar.This is sweet payback.

There's plenty of Canadians who travel to the US as well. They've never been concerned about pissing us off. Why should we, now that the tables are turned?

I guess it's a sore spot with me, because we've had some pretty arrogant ones here over the years. Personally, I think it'll do a few of them (just the arrogant ones) some good to have a little taste of humble pie.
