A new low? Only in degree. The west, was for too long safe in our own ignorance. We could ignore Rewanda. We could ignore the chemical attacks on the Kurds. We could ignore all manner of things that seemed to have no effect on us. We felt we could not ignore an attack on those we saw as ourselves. Nothing had changed but the victims.
Look, there have been plenty of heinous acts by humanity down through the ages, but I can't think of anything quite like this.
I mean to use people to kill people with, when has that been done? And some of them children?
To crash one plane, just to make sure the cameras are on to film the second one going in. (Or, to smash a second just to prove the first wasn't an accident.)
To kill masses of people, merely and simply to let them know you don't like them.
When have there been things like this?
Sure, brutality is brutality, and millions and millions have been killed for this and that.
But even Vlad the Impaler could say he enjoyed seeing people suffer. This doesn't even rise to that level.
