Racism isn't IMO any more of a problem in Canada than in any other liberal Western democracy but denial or underrecognition seems to be. In my own experiences compared to the U.S., Canada has less in the way of racist institutions and outspoken high profile racists but if anything more in the way of casual "coffee table" racism.

was between one set of imports and another. The exception was the problems First Peoples faced, and that seems to be fading, around here anyhow.

I was in Scarborough a few years ago when my father-in-law was dying. I was mortified by comments I heard by people that were in that room. Things such as:
1. Why don't those people have their own hospital?
2. I hope they don't bring in Chinaman food - it attracts flies.
3. Why do we have to pay for those people's care with our taxes.
4. Don't they ever bathe?
These things were said with the loved ones family actually present - talk about a lack of decency!
These same people didn't seem to bat an eye at the abundance of nurses from visible minorities - I guess it was alright if they were helping good old white folk........
I'm not targetting Ontario in general. I think I just noticed it more because there seem to be more people of different cultures present at the time.

Newfoundland is mostly white. I would say Asian would be the second.

Really the only time I notice racisim here is when the news reports on problem communities. There is alot happening in the Jamacian community right now, so there of course there are going to be comments.

Racism is not a problem in Canada.
Racism will always exist.
The Toronto police used to keep racial criminal statistics until the barking mad Chow (she of the left hand of Handsome Jack of the knee dippers) who was the head of the police commission discovered it. The howling protests were heard across this great land. The officer in charge of maintaining the stats, Sergeant Ben Ing, argued the relevance of these stats but the lefties including the fish wrap were too loud.
Naturally Canada's national fish wrap parlayed this info into a huge spread and accused the flatfeet of racial profiling.

These are contradictory statements. If one agrees that racism is inherently a bad thing, than if racism will always exist, it will always be a problem.

This is the kind of thing I'm talking about, even in the supposedly more cosmopolitan cities people are so unabashedly blatant with that kind of thing here. It's like people actually seem to go out of their way to make sure you hear what was said! Between that and the appearant and creepy sense of unspoken racism I often encounter this can be very humiliating country to live at times.
The thing with Canadian society is that while full blown Nazi and KKK {and whatever equivalent} types are shunned and condemned, anything short of that level seems to be OK. What's more is that people will treat you like you're a maniac and even gang up on you if you call them on it.

Definition:
-The belief that race accounts for differences in human character or ability and that a particular race is superior to others.
-Discrimination or prejudice based on race.
I'm saying it has always existed and always will. Is it a problem (the original question)? No.
I don't think anyone will argue that it's not a bad thing.

I don't believe racism is a big problem in Canada... But, it does seem to be rising.. At least, Anti-Semitism is.. I agree with previous statements about small towns being more racist then other communities, many adults I know are openly discriminative, although they don't commit hate crimes against visible minorities or anything of the like, just talk about them behind their backs..
Perfect example is my father, although, it still does not make discrimination right, it is understandable in his case. (I still think he is wrong and rude for it) He lost his job recently due to Brazilian & Chinese labor forces.. The company decided it is cheaper to have slave labor wages out of country then to stick with us... So, he's kind of pissed towards Asians... He basically discriminates against anyone not white, not english speaking, and that doesn't farm... Although many of his friends are in that category... Anyway, he'd never harm anyone, he just stereotypes alot.
A new trend I have seen though, at least at my school, is tolerance.. At least towards other cultures. My school does still seem homophobic though. Anyway, I know for a fact that if anyone commited a crime purely because of the victims race, that person would probably end up in a bloody mess.
