Smokin Joe, if I understand you correctly, as a Canadian it is OK to get rid of the Canadian flag if you want to make more money but to raise awareness of an issue where the PM lied is not? :?
I tend to be conservative in my beliefs and even I think that it is worse to use the flag for monetary gain than to bring up a point of the feds lying. If that is the case what else could we get rid of if our only goal is to make money?

For god sake you guys!!
Disagreeing with the Canadian Government in this situation isn't an attack on national unity. This premier feels humiliated and under seige.
Keep in focus here that he is the elected representative of the people of NFLD. The people of NFLD are Canadians. He lowered the flags because the feds were screwing over the people of NFLD. Newfies have felt left out in the cold many times in the past 50 years. As Canadians, we need to start sticking by them a little more. From the surface, this seems like a monetary issue but its a far deeper issue than that. The revenue he is fighting for will provide NFLD with a lot more independance. NFLD will be a much stronger partner in the dominion of Canada. Their natural resources will provide NFLD with better health care, employment and social programs. NFLD will be one less province on the "have not' list.

Not only that, McPuck, but Canada will be stronger for it in the long run. One less have not province is one more chance to move this nation forward. Paul Martin doesn't think like that he is old and owes a lot of favours to people who really don't give a rat's ass about Canada.

Martin's only real concern is the next election and how to gain a majority. I think he thought he could trade a couple of seats in Newfoundland for a few more in the rest of Canada in the next election. Instead he got in trouble with his existing MPs from Newfoundland (and likely elsewhere) and the premiers, most of who are backing Williams in this, at least tacitly.

Williams really wants Newfoundland to do well. I doubt his motives are truly honourable, but he is fighting for his province instead of foreign business connections.

He's whipping Martin like a cheap hound on this one and, while I don't like him using the flag to do it, I hope he keeps it up.

Exactly ...

the bottom line here is ...

the whores of business aside, NFLD's people will benefit if Williams wins this fight and as you said, so will all of Canada.

Just recently read the D.W. said the flags are going back up in the "NEAR FUTURE", with or without another meeting set up with P.M....He says the point has been made to other Canadians, and that they have noticed. To say that he's trying to divide the counrty is insane. Newife's are just as proud to be Canadian as anyone else.

Martins company uses another flag to save money. It's a companies job to make money. Williams taking down the flag was, is and will always be to me more disrespectful. If the Ford Oakville plant took down the ford signs and flags what would the backlash be.Williams is like the ceo of ford Oakville. Those employee's are ford workers first.

So does this mean that Martin won.

He never had mine to begin with, What he did win was more respect by not dealing with williams until the flags go up

Before this thread dies let me say a few things.

A local newspaper 'The Independent' did a little search of there own and they found that since confederation the feds have received 50 billion from Newfoundland and we have gotten back 10 million. So who is benifiting the most from this???

The flags were taken down, they were not burned and spit on. If the feds are not going to ignolage we exits for more reasons then to rape then we will not ignolage them.

Quebec doesnt fly the flag either yet people do not seem to care.
