Canadian Tanith Belbin is desperately trying to get U.S. citizenship so she can represent America in the next Olympic Games. I guess she knows what side her bread is buttered on.

Just to make you feel better, we do have new rules (Tanith actually applied too early to qualify), so folks with "extraordinary ability" can get fast track U.S. citizenship. So, what other Olympic athletes can we get?

Please send the best and brightest to America, thank you.

Well, I'll violate everyone's sense of propriety and say that I've always thought the athletes should compete on an individual basis, not on a national team basis.

$1:
Canada's ice-dancing talent pool is pretty deep - she may have a better shot at making the US team than the Canadian.

Without a doubt Canada has greate skating talent all around. However, Tanith isn't just trying to make the U.S. team... she wants to win a medal.

Right! Especially since the end of the cold war, we do love the athletes regardless of where they come from. Most of the chauvinism is now coming from some of the asian nations like Korea (speed skating). And we were all pulling for Canadians Jamie Sale and David Pelletier at the 2002 Olympics because they were the best.

Nevertheless...It is significant that Tanith feels that there is more opportunity by competing as an American. Maybe if she had a nice Canadian stud to be her partner she would skate for Canada?

I don't think it's more opportunity on the ice, it's more opportunity for contracts later.

How much does a Canadian gold medalist figure skater make the next year?

How much does an American one make?

I was once involved in a complete production of

THE TRAGEDY OF MACBETH...ON ICE.

It was really good, except the Ghost of Banquo kept falling on his ass during the banquet scene.

Except that was intra-country moving around, and has no relation to this thread.

I've always understood the athelet represented the country he/she was a citizen of. If she has dual citizenship then fine she can go on the US team. If not she needs to qualify for the canadian team.

Anyone remember a guy named Bret Hull? I didn't agree with what he did and I don't agree with what this missy is trying to do.

Hmm this is kind of a troll post , trolling for some reaction from us Canadians. I don't worry, there are plenty of real Canadians dying to represent there country.

You're right Brett Hull was a totally different situation. At that point in time he couldn't make the Canadian team, but he could the US team. After that he was just being loyal to those who gave him the opportunity when he needed it.
