I think if Wawra had spent one iota of time researching his trip to Calgary, especially Stampede, he might have had a better understanding of what we're all about here. They don't call it the 'Greatest Show on Earth' for no reason. Hell, we were even featured on that stupid show, Art Mann Presents shown on HDNet - and of course it wasn't hard for him to find the most spectacularly drunk, partying fools out enjoying themselves. In fact, despite all the drunks, I think it's actually safer walking around during Stampede because of the atmosphere. Everyone seems intent on having a good time and inhibitions are drastically lowered. Definitely not a threatening atmosphere *for most*.

The thing about Wawra that I truly find disturbing is that being a police officer, he is trained in assessing threats and risk or supposed to be. If he found that situation on Nose Hill to be so threatening that he felt he needed a gun to resolve it, I would be truly frightened to encounter this guy, on duty, in his home town. I'm hoping that his encounter here will cure his need to ever visit Canada again.

I'm afraid if this dumphuk had his firearm the headlines may have read 'Two Calgarians shot by American tourist for being friendly.' One has to wonder how often he's drawn his firearm, without just cause, on his own folk....'Officer will you help find my mommy?'

I have a feeling he would have had the inflated confidence to get belligerent with these guys and probably just acted more of a asshole.

What I want to know is what Xort could have possibly done in the military? I some how dont see him on the pointy end.

He 'retired' from the military with the rank of Pte. Couldn't even cut it as a Career Cpl. I think he even said he was a reservist. fuck. I likely saw more action teaching in Somali refugee camps

Retired as a Cpl, one tour in Afghanistan, I was a tank gunner in the regular force. Armour in Canada also covers recon, once I came back I was armoured recon, and went to the 2010 games doing recon.

If you can quote me saying I finished as a private that would be funny, because I was only a private in basic training, I became a trooper when I was done with basic.

Funny because while in Afghanistan I was in the B vehicle of my troop, and ran with mine rollers. The only person who was more on the pointy end was my driver because he was ahead of me. Every time I left the FOB my vehicle was in the front.

People that come upto you and try to start talking with you on the street are as a general rule upto no good.

You see when I was overseas and working with Armoured Recce, they had coyotes not tanks. Since you cant really recce anything in a Leopard, so maybe someone else could clear that up for me.

Also having the attitude that being in Afghanistan inside a tank with mine rollers made you the pointy end really shows you are delusional.

I wasn't deployed to Afghanistan as recon, or recce or reconnaissance. As I said I was in recce for the 2010 olimpic games.

Also I will dispute your claim you can't do recce in a tank, it has a good optical sight, good night sight and a reasonable sized crew. As all armoured recce in Afghanistan that I heard about was overt the vehicle selected wouldn't matter, and having effective fire out to 4km would be a nice addition.

In the begining I heard that a lot of actual recon was conducted. However by the later years most of the recon had been switched to overwatch duties. It seems that the incress in the number of UAVs that could be used made putting a recce patrol out on a hill less desirable.

I guess the LAV drivers and gunners are not part of the pointy end of the stick? Only guys walking around on foot are? So when my tank was breaching a compound and the infantry where behind me, what was my tank then, the haft?

The tanks were near indestructible, very few things could penetrate the tanks, so forgive me if I dont think you were in great danger. That's not to say the tankers were useless, hearing the gun go off could scare the piss out of you in the back of LAV so I can imagine what the enemy thought.

Tankers like yourself might have been the shaft but I wouldn't call you the tip.

Yeah, please, the pair of you must absolutely continue to compare dick sizes on who is the dude on the most pointy end.

Never been to the sand box but I've got the top SSI for deployment time at sea. Can I get in on the who has a bigger dick game too?

Shit sakes...

The pointy end doesn't denote the amount of danger you are in, what it denotes is the roll compleated. Although at the time, tanks were still the main target and took the most non small arms fire when I was in theater.

The pointy end is the attacking force, tanks were part of aggresive operations and many times for my tour my vehicle was the very first vehicle into an area. When a defensive position was taken up, the outside ring of vehicles was LAV IIIs and tanks. The fighting force was infantry and tanks, working to support each other. I never kicked in a door, or conducted a search, so I wouldn't care to call myself a Doorkicker.

Then the metaphor doesn't make sense as you have excluded an assault asset from being called part of the tip.

You said you worked with Yoties doing recce, what did you do?

Doubt. I'd bet it would be an argument on who encountered the bigger IED.
