Someday Canadians will start defining themselves by what it means to be a Canadian and not start by saying that they are not Americans.

Someday.

I'm Canadian and know EXACTLY what he's saying. Some Canadians entire description of themselves can be summed up with the words "I am not an American".

To me, that is pretty sad.

Meh. Kiwis suffer from the same fate. Always having to tell people you're not Australian. Obviously, it's a big deal to them to make the separation, but most folks can't tell them apart. Reflexive anti-Americanism is annoying though. Ran into it from some of teh Europeans in Afghanistan, as soon as teh Americans left the room. Didn't hear much of it from Canadian troops though, happy to say.

And after Afghnaistan, who have two of the world's biggest pricks for neighbours (Iran, Pakistan) you appreciate a good neighbour.
