Becoming American would be a fate worse than death for most Canadians

Ya, I know it was said on another forum. But I'm curious what posters have to say about the comment on this site.

To me, such a comment can only come from a bigot, nothing more, nothing less.

I find many Canadians sense of "being Canadian" is based purely on the fact that we are not Americans, and bashing the States and such.
I personally don't see myself becoming an American anytime soon, of course the same thing could be said about becoming Scottish or Australian.

Why would that statement necessarily be a bigoted one?

What if the question were reversed? Would you consider becoming a Canadian a fate worse than death? Based on the right wing slant of many Americans, I'd guess that that would be their answer.

I would not consider it worse than death, but I would see it as the worst day in my entire life if Canada were swallowed by the USA. I have zero interest in becoming an American.

I'm Canadian and will be until the day I die, period. That's patriotism, not racism...

Well said. I think most people in any decent country wouldn't want to be "from another country". I personally wouldn't call it a "fate worse than death" to become British, Australian, or American because we really aren't that different. We all have our own home grown lunatics, and all have things about them that I personally admire.

I think their wording "a fate worse than death" is a little off deep end and lacks substance. Usually someone that makes that kind of statement hasn't spent much time down there and is agenda driven in their logic. If it's because of patriotism to his own country it'd be understandable, just as it would be for an American to feel patriotic in the same way.

It's the internet..........

I'd have no real problem moving to New England - it's basically the same culture and geography as the Maritimes.

Very true BN.

I think 85% of the Canadian population lives within an hour of the US border so the regional similarities would match. I'm about 20 minutes from the US border and can see that. Mind you I've lived in the US so I really don't see the big deal...........and I was in the south!

Very partial to Montana! Wide open spaces, easy access to mountains, no fear of firearms. What's not to like! :D Actually sounds a lot like Alberta. :o

I don't think I'd live anywhere in the south - I like waking up to frost in the mornings. My aunt had lived in Texas for a while, and said she had to relearn how to walk, because normal, Canadian walking in that heat was exhausting; not for me.

Well, for those whom becoming an American would be a 'fate worse than death' I'm happy not to call them Americans.

I'm sure if you dig down and analyze these people you'll probably find that they're not very good Canadians either.

Thinking about it, the majority of whom said this are probably Quebecers.

New York, Boston, San Francisco..... There are a few places in the US I wouldn't mind living.

But seeing Canada absorbed into The Evil Empire would blow.

Great spin but that's not what he said. If he had a choice between death and becoming an American, he would choose death.

I'm quite sure I would pick to live anywhere in the Western World rather than die.
