bootlegga bootlegga: Why is saying Canadian beer is great, US bashing? Whether or not it is, it is an opinion, just like when Americans I've met say that America is the greatest nation on earth. Should I get offended that because they think they are the best, it automatically makes Canada number 2 or number 111 or whatever? Of course not.
The thing I find about a lot of people is that they expect Canadians to be quiet and reserved and polite when they meet them overseas.
Well, fuck that!
Why can everyone else be patriotic about the country they love and not Canadians? I like wearing a maple leaf on my backpack and I'll do so until the day I die. I say get loud and be patriotic, and if people from other countries don't like it, tough shit! If American fans can chant U-S-A! U-S-A! at international sporting events, why can't anyone else? If Americans can be proud of their basketball and baseball teams, why can't Canucks be proud of our hockey team? Or the Brazilians proud of their soccer team?
Is my government or even my country perfect? Of course not, but I'm still damn proud of where I live and what I have. I'll admit I don't really know which is the 'best' country in the world, but I'll rank Canada in the top 10% at the very least. Maybe you think that Canada is headed in the wrong direction. That's fine, there are a sizeable chunk in Canada who would agree with you. There is also a sizeable chunk that thinks we're doing just fine thanks! You may call us leftists, but for the majority of our history, it has worked pretty well for us to have the Liberals running the show (which rankles the right wing in Canada to no end).
Who are you, an outsider, to judge how we run our country? Americans who received letters from the UK (prior to the 2004 election) were incensed that foreigners would have the gall to tell them how to vote, and I agree with them. I don't want Americans or Japanese or anyone else telling Canadians how to vote or run our country. That is an internal decision and really none of your business. I'm not trying to be a dick and start a flame war, just saying the way I see it. The world may not have liked that Bush was re-elected, but they just have to accept it.
And I agree with you that many here do their level best to try and measure up to you. My experience is those that do are the ones who most want to emulate you and turn away from our 'leftist' values, which have done us proud for decades.
I don't suffer from an inferiority complex, I'm patriotic...Go Team Canada!

Dear Canadians,
I love Canada for many reasons:
The beer-- the higher alcohol content makes for a quicker, cheaper buzz. The only beer I love more are the microbrews from Wisconsin (and we have a lot of them)!
The people-- I have friends in Moncton and in St. John's and I love them all dearly.
The accent-- I love to say "aboot" and "eh" just as much as people like to say "bubbler" (Milwaukee for drinking fountain) and "soda" or "pop" or whatever the hell people call carbonated beverages. It's just in good fun!
The healthcare system-- being a nursing student, it's fun to study other forms of healthcare. I don't think anyone really has gotten all the kinks worked out, but I certainly don't think US healthcare is where it's at.
The hockey-- I'll admit that I'm a bit of a rookie in my knowledge of the game, however the hockey-playing boyfriend assures me that hockey players from Canada make the NHL as spectacular to watch as it is. My only beef is that I can NEVER find the puck... can we make it pink or something?
The scenery-- What a beautiful beautiful country you have!
The proximity-- A quick getaway to Canada is easier than a trip to Florida for those of us in Wisconsin.
Reading this post has been an eye-opening experience for me. I've never been one for history of any sort (hence the science-based major) so I really have no idea who did what to whom and why, nor do I have any desire to learn. Does that make me a bad person? Not really. I'm sure that it is important to learn from historical woes, but I'm going to concentrate on learning about medicine and let someone else do it. Probably not the best attitude, but well at least I'm honest.
As far as Bush goes, I didn't vote for him... ever... But he's our freakin president so I have to hope that he manages to stop sucking major balls until he can get the hell out of office. And I'm sick of this stupid war. Friends leave and never come back... I've had enough. Yes, I'm one of those people totally against a war that I don't really get... why can't we just leave now?
But understand that I do love the US, and I am proud of my country. I'm not a finger-pointer, laughing and saying, "my country is better than yours and you should do things our way." I'm an average, working-middle-class, overworked, overtaxed and overwhelmed 23 year old. Our country has its kinks, but I still love it here and I'm glad that you all feel the same way about yours!

Tman1 Tman1: Jaime_Souviens Jaime_Souviens: Wait! Stop there. You're attacking something. I call it his credibility, you want to call it something else, fine and dandy. You go on attacking him about touchiness on the White House in a very uncreative and repetitive manner. Don't put words in my mouth nor my actions. I'm not attacking anything but rather to set the facts straight. You can call it whatever the hell you want, credibility, mojo, it doesn't matter. I asked him what the White House has to do with anything at all in context with the U.S. attacking Canada several times and why he thinks it is a "big" thing in Canada ONCE, when he's the one who brought it up. Streaker even said "What relevance does this have? Jaime_Souviens Jaime_Souviens: I decided to call that his 'credibility' as being a very useful and elastic general term, (though using it involves the reader in a certain task of mental alacrity). If you want to call it his...his... whatever. Fine. You're floundering here. You call it his credibility, I call it his revision of certain events which I happen to disagree with. Bull flops. You wrote : Tman1 Tman1: Only the ignorant continue to "actually" believe this and only the desparate continue to use it as a "comfort zone" if you will against the U.S. but safe to say, it still amazes me that Americans seem to jump with glee at the chance to point out this little ignorant piece of history.....Does it get to you that much? You're attacking him for his references to the White House. Why else would you write "Does it get to you that much?" Out of a tender concern for his well-being? Tman1 Tman1: Make up your friggan mind, we both can't be right. Actually, you can. It's the nature of historical argument. We live in a world where events themselves are deeply ambiguous, and on top of that, interpreting motivations is exponentially more complex. You add to that the fact that what is true on one side of the border is not true on the other, and then, yes, both can be right. Tman1 Tman1: Jaime_Souviens Jaime_Souviens: Nice. An excellent example of being quoted out of context. I was referring to the impressments / cause of war issue at that point. Dually noted. I may have mistakenly misquoted you but that doesn't make my criticism or words any less valid or wait, in this case, meaningless. What are you complaining about here? First, you mistakenly apply my 'meaningless' reference to all your posts, then I point out that I didn't say that, and you're still moping about a slur that was never given. What am I supposed to do, apologize for the misapprehensions in your own head? Tman1 Tman1: Jaime_Souviens Jaime_Souviens: Quoting out of context is not the honorable person's approach to discussion Neither is hounding on someones mistake to make their blatant point.
What hounding? I mentioned it once.
Look up "hounding"...

I'm not complaining, it just seems to dampen the patriotic message if you have stand in talent.

That's my point. Ukranian from Ukraine, Czech from Czech. Not Canada.

Tman1 Tman1: Nobody ever has to say anything in order to DO anything. I made valid points, you couldn't come up with anything. I did nothing other than respond when the situation demanded. In this case, your posts were just oozing condescension themselves and I responded in kind. If I wasn't interested in a debate, I wouldn't even have joined into the discussion and made points to counter yours. Funny, in order to debate, one must respond to the other's posts in order to counter them with their own ideas and points. You didn't. Don't ingeniously try to paint me as the bad guy here not interested in a debate. As for the tone and apparent condescending posts, this is a forum. It happens sometimes.
Nothing I have ever posted on this forum has ever been in a condescending manner towards Canada or Canadians. Apparently your ego and nationalism have been bruised by something I said. You were being very antagonostic in your replies and I don't respond well to it. I will engage in a discussion on the War of 1812 when I have the time to startup a thread. In the meantime, I'll drop this topic, it's way off course.

I've been of the perimeter of this thread and I thought Yank-in-NY had been acting very well. I don't have an axe to grind and I don't really have an opinion on the topic but I'd say that Yank's threads were much less offensive than Mustang's.
...and with $2.00, that will buy coffee

Nice to see objectivity in passive action.
