Right now the smoke is so bad that they have closed Fraser Surrey Docks until further notice.

The largest undeveloped metropolitan land mass in North America.
I would definately be against bulldozing it to put in more apartments and strip malls.

Burns Bog at one time supplied magnesium for munitions during WW2.....it was extracted from the peat moss there. But still I would agree with ridenrain......this area is totally unique and should not by any means be developed. The fire as well.....apparently this is a rather natural occurance and has been going on for thousands of years. There was a fire way back when (do not know the exact date) that lasted for 4 years!

Smoke actually looks as though it's cleared up a bit. Not nearly was thick as it was.

I didn't smell it either in Richmond but it was a little smoggy, especially this morning. Apparently people in Washington could see the smoke as well. It hasn't bothered me at all.

If they don't fight the frigging fire properly soon the bog will be a enviromental nightmare. You cannot fight that fire effectively from the air, the ground has to be saturated.

The helicopters need to follow a perimiter and set the bags almost on the ground to release the water.

That is the plan. They are going to be saturating the soil, but they had to fight the flames first.

The problem is the water level that is now being regulated by humans rather than nature. It's just too dry in the summer.

The smoke is bad,had to get out of the apt. Headed for Jerico and some fresh air.
Hallways still stink, and its going to be one hell of a job getting the smell out of everything.

Cough Cough wheeezz..

You can fight the fire on top with retardant from the bombers but you need the saturation to stop the fire from moving underneath. I guess what I am trying to say is you have to attack both at the same time not one or the other.

Only help putting this out is steady rain for at least 4 days.
What we don't want is a strong wind may clear the smoke, but fan the flames.

If smoke is your cup of tea then I guess you want a temp. conv.Lock it in,amd lets all be smoke eaters

God my eyes are beginng to burn again, guess the wind has changed

you can't develop burns bog.. since it is sort of the "lungs of the lowermainland".. been through this a thousand times out here. 75% of the lowermainland sits on Peat Moss 35-200 feet thick before Solid rock. Parts of Richmond, Vancouver, Burnaby, Coquitlam, Delta, Surrey Langley, Pitt meadows, Mission, Abbotsford are all built up on peat.. the reason in some areas the maximum height you can build too is 3 storeys (35 feet).

Yes it is on fire in some areas.. but even if they put out the fire.. the last one lasted 4 years back in the late 80's early 90's.. you never completely put out a peat fire.. they keep burning and burning... wouldn't be surprised if this new fire was just the old fire still burning under ground... The land renews itself which is why peat moss is such an interesting ecosystem.. Unfortunately this happens and in inconviences some people... with the smell of smoke.. but Burn's bog takes a lot of the polutants and CO ( carbon monoxide) and co2 in....

The Van Sun had a story a couple of days ago involving setting up dykes and flooding the bog to it's "proper" level. All the development in the area has drained the water from the area leaving the bog vulnerable to these fires.
