lily lily:
I read in one paper that a local farmer had threatened to sue if the water level wasn't lowered as it was affecting his land... and that's maybe why it was so dry.

Burns Bog will never be developed... we here in Delta, particularly the south part, scream loud and long at the threat of any development that could have an adverse effect on our precious lifestyle. ;)

Yeah I read that as well Lily about the water level....

It is actually very nice this morning....no smoke that I can see. Apparently it is 80% contained now.

Grow up?? Is that like a Grow op?

Sorry for all you BCians, but I find this bog fire incredibly interesting... I hadn't heard of this before now. I assume it's a pretty harmless event, other than the smoke?

Harmless? like when a coal seam catches fire in Cape Breton. As long as no one is living in the immediate area, it's harmless. Those suckers can smolder for years and then flare up.

We have something similar going on here in the state of Pennsylvania... the Centralia mine fires that have been burning since 1961!

"Most of the residents were relocated over the years with grants from the federal government although some die-hards refused to be bought out and some still remain in the town."

Have a look...

The part of England were I was raised (English Pennines) is mainly moorland peat bog, the stone is millstone grit. Back in 1975 after a long dry spell, the moors started to burn.

Month after month of thick heavy white smoke. There was no way to extinguish the smoldering peat as it covered approx' 200 square miles, and was burning under the surface.

That year in October we had some heavy rain which quenched the fires, or so it was thought. Later, five people died when hiking over the moors and fell into the voids created by the burnt underground peat, which was still smoldering.

It took two more years for the problem to go away.

Some of the larger millstone grit boulders which formed recognisable landmarks dissapeared into the voids

Frank
