The big guy and I did the Maligne Canyon hike last June and absolutely loved it. The sights through the canyon are absolutely breathtaking. Recently, I discovered that you can actually hike the canyon floor in the winter. We're totally doing that! Just wondering if anyone here has done it already and has any tips to offer.

Just a few reasons why we're going:

C'mon Rosie, you can't be serious! You's actually gonna wait till it's all froze overbefore you take a walk down there? Where's the thrill in that???

Stud up some old hiking boots with a few, short, sheet metal screws.

Those rubber things with studs that you slip over yours shoes can be a bit small for hiking boots, if thats what you wear.

Given that I'm anything but a thrill seeker - YES!! Let's also factor in that I've seen that sucker when the water isn't stiff.

Good point. I'll try my studs on for size on my boots rather than the shoes I usually use them with. Thank you. This is why I ask.

You need to get the good ones... those cheap rubber things are only good for walks on snowy sidewalks. The good ones though, are close to $80.

Those crampons are better suited to heavy duty ice climbing, so unless you're planning to climb a waterfall I'd go with something a bit more on the lighter side.

I've been there a couple times in the winter. Never did any of the official tours, but it's easy enough to do on your own. Didn't need the spikes either, just had to walk a little slower in spots. The hardest part is actually getting down to the ice, but there are several easy to spot places you can do it, particularily near the 5th bridge.

Unsound Unsound:

Good to know. Thanks! We're looking at doing the guided tour for the first go around. More so for the information they offer. We like field trips. :) And it's only $60, so what the heck. After that, who knows.
When we went in June, the fifth bridge was out, so we had to go up to the parking lot, hike past the fourth bridge and then go back. It was nice, but we couldn't do the entire hike, which was a wee bit disappointing. I'm going to use it as an excuse to go back again.
Now we just have to wait for this cold snap to end so we can plan a trip. [cold]
