Actually, the prime minister has no right to advise a general election over any issue. This Government of Canada caused to be enacted a statute which forbids the prime minister from advising Her Excellency The Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean C.C. C.M.M. C.O.M. C.D. , the Governor General of Canada ,... |

I wish for senate reform, does that mean I am a closet Liberal[?] Absolutely not. The Liberal Party in the House of Commons has in fact been pushing for their honourable senators to pass these reforms—they even urged their own senators to pass the federal budget. I have lost faith in the leadership... |

That's many words to say "self serving" or as you say "protect themselves". Learn to read. I said nothing of the sort—current senators would not be affected if they passed these reforms. They are considering the reforms according to the best interests of Canadians and the ... |

This is ridiculous. These murals depict a part of the rich history of the Province of British Columbia , though perhaps not always one of gumdrops and lollipops. I am disappointed in the Government of British Columbia and, in particular, The Honourable Gordon Campbell M.L.A. ( Vancouver—Point Grey )... |

Your point hasn’t been proven in the least, PluggyRug , but keep trying. These honourable senators have no need to block this legislation in order to protect themselves—they’ve nothing to lose through the passage of either of these reform bills. Both of them grandfather present senators into the Sen... |

An 8 year elected term sounds just about right. That’s too bad, then. A number of Liberal and Conservative senators have amended the bill to prescribe non-renewable fifteen-year terms, instead of eight-year terms. (And that’s only if the Supreme Court rules that the bill is in fact constitutional—o... |

You know exactly what I mean. Actually, I haven’t the slightest of ideas. Our Canadian constitution prescribes that Canadians are to have the right to both democratic and appointed Houses of legislature. It is the Constitution Act, 1867 itself that prescribes the appointed nature and other fundamen... |

PluggyRug PluggyRug: Liberal dominated senate it is, the only thing unconstitutional is the fact that they are unelected.
Ah, yes, sure.
And which section of the Constitution Acts, 1867–1982 would that be? |

sasquatch2 , your argument makes no sense. Even if the Senate were to pass the Constitution Act, 2007 (Senate tenure) and the Senate Appointments Consultations Act (neither of which, in any case, may be proceeded with since both are unconstitutional as written), both Acts prescribe that all current... |

I am reluctant to respond to a question phrased to make me sound absurd. Nonetheless, in response to your first inquery, the person charged with recording the attendance of members of the Senate is the admirable Mr. Paul Bélisle , Clerk of the Senate and Clerk of the Parliaments . He was appointed i... |

A majority of senators show up daily (though under normal circumstances, the Senate’s week begins on Tuesday), I would invite you to check the Journals of the Senate for a list of senators in attendance at the opening of the sitting, and in attendance to business later on. There is a misconception t... |

That's rich considering they're not passing Harper's senate reform bill that while ignoring the "dominance" of the house and likely what a majority of Canadians want. Many Canadians, myself included, believe that the method through which this Government is endeavouring the reform the Sena... |

You apparently don’t understand our system of government, ryan29 . The Government does not legislate—Parliament legislates. Some sixty-four per cent of Canadians voted for parties that supported the Kyoto Protocol Implementation Act and, thus, it was passed by the House of Commons and, after much th... |

guess the liberal senate figures they can pass whatever they want and force the government to follow there lead. this did pass the house of commons but without government support so its kinda odd it has become law. The Government is the executive, and the Senate and Commons are the legislative. Par... |

It’s good to see the Senate of Canada is standing up for Canadians. Let’s be clear here—the Government of Canada ’s failure of a budget only passed by virtue of these concessions. The Senate let pass a controversial and shameful budget bill, recognising the dominance of the House of Commons , while ... |
