You know French King Louis XIV ? The one who never actually said "L'etat, c'est moi" but reflected that belief in his attitude to running the country? It turns out that he absolutely hated Paris due to the violent upheavals he experienced during the "Fronde", a power struggled be...

Yeesh, just do a cheesy announcement on social media. There are plenty of graphical emojis, captions and other stuff that you can use for that. If you want to get together with other people in person, just have a house party or a picnic in a local park with no pyrotechnics.

And they start the cannibalism. :) This makes me wonder how long Danielle Smith can possibly keep the peace between the different factions of her caucus, not to mention the party executive. In between Take Back Alberta's pushing for harder actions, the resistance from the more moderate UCPers, the ...

The only tinge of regret I have is that now the Twitter posts that I have in my bookmark library might not be accessible anymore unless I log in through something like Facebook. Then again, I might just be able to use the Internet Archive. Otherwise, I find nothing but some grim amusement at Twitter...

Forum: Canadian Politics   Topic: Reflections On Canada Day: Is Canada 'Broken'?

I’m writing this on the morning of Canada Day 2023, thinking about all the fascinating things I’ve read and the people I’ve met. Is Canada ‘broken’? The question certainly seems everywhere these days . People feel like they’re barely getting by; Younger Canadians have a harder time finding homes the...

I suppose Stockton Rush thought he was the protagonist of an Ayn Rand novel, given his complaining about how "regulation stifles innovation" and his refusal to have his oh-so-perfect designs independently tested, to the point of firing engineers who raised concerns about the Titan. Unfortu...

I stumbled across a report card from when I was a kid, it used A/B/C/D/F, but Edmonton Public School no longer uses letter grades, instead it now uses Exemplary, Proficient, Adequate and Limited...basically A/B/C/F. In junior and senior high, they do give out number grades and use the A/B/C/D/F ran...

I don't think that Donald Marshall would have been eligible for execution if capital punishment were still in effect. He was inebriated at the time the crime he was falsely accused of happened and being in a drunken or stoned state at the time of murder has always been enough, even during our own &...

Deterrence is irrelevant. And a red herring in general too. If prison, a death sentence, exile, or any other punishment was a deterrent to killing another then there wouldn't have been a single other murder committed by anyone since Cain killed Abel. Some people, like Bernardo, have done things so ...

Unfortunately, most governments are reactive not proactive when it comes to safety, and the reality is that safety isn't sexy and doesn't win votes, especially in rural areas that already vote conservative en masse. The sad fact is that most infrastructure construction is aimed at economic developm...

For as fast as things change in today's politics, one thing seems to have become a permanently stable factor in the machines. The more radical the movement & the politician the more likely it is that they will dominate. The old moderates aren't just not welcome anymore. They don't have much of ...

This piece was published in my local paper on May 18. Due to the agreement between me and the newspaper, I couldn't publish it until it was uploaded on their website. The wildfires currently ravaging Alberta come at a tricky time, namely right in the middle of a provincial election campaign. Premie...

What's the Kennedy name even worth, in the grand scheme of things? Sure, JFK made Americans feel good about themselves, but he dithered on the civil rights bills that Johnson had to ram through Congress, he soiled the bed on the Bay of Pigs and Cuba, he left himself wide open to blackmail with all h...

Conversely, if third parties don't run, we will be stuck in another two party system forever. I'd rather people got out and voted for someone rather than stay home. The result may still be the same because they weren't going to vote anyway, but it offers the disaffected an alternative. And eventual...
