Television icon Dick Clark, the host of "American Bandstand" who went on to ring in the New Year with millions of television viewers for nearly four decades, has died. He was 82.
Wow. One of the few decent people who came out of Hollywood. He'll be missed.
I don't know if you folks in Canada ever saw him on $24,000 Pyramid but his natural and gentle demeanor was a radically new idea in an age when game show hosts were typically flamboyant, fake, and drunk.

Dick Clark was also a legitimate civil rights hero in his own way. He ended ABC's "white only" policy for performers, encouraging original black artists to perform rather than the white cover artists who were reproducing black music and gaining popularity among teens. Bandstand was also one of the first television shows to feature white and black performers sharing the same stage. RIP, Dick.
