Well seeing that the decade only began a month ago I'd agree. However, the Indian Ocean earthquake and accompanying tsunami in '04 was far more devastating over a larger area(not even all of Haiti sufferedits effects) and in the number of fatalities. Hell, it caused the planet to shift in its tilt slightly.
he 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake was an undersea megathrust earthquake that occurred at 00:58:53 UTC on December 26, 2004, with an epicentre off the west coast of Sumatra, Indonesia. The quake itself is known by the scientific community as the Sumatra-Andaman earthquake. The resulting tsunami itself is given various names, including the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, Asian Tsunami, Indonesian Tsunami, and Boxing Day Tsunami.
The earthquake was caused by subduction and triggered a series of devastating tsunamis along the coasts of most landmasses bordering the Indian Ocean, killing nearly 230,000 people in fourteen countries, and inundating coastal communities with waves up to 30 meters (100 feet) high. It was one of the deadliest natural disasters in recorded history. Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India, and Thailand were the hardest hit.
With a magnitude of between 9.1 and 9.3, it is the second largest earthquake ever recorded on a seismograph. This earthquake had the longest duration of faulting ever observed, between 8.3 and 10 minutes. It caused the entire planet to vibrate as much as 1 cm (0.4 inches) and triggered other earthquakes as far away as Alaska.
We've got almost 10 years of this decade to go. Let's hope they are right about this being the worst quake of the decade
Technically the decade doesnt start till 2011...Same as the end of the millennium didn't come till after 1000 years which would have been 00:00:01 on Jan 1 2001. Unless there was a year 0 in which case the joke is on me (again).
while the European heatwave of 2003 was blamed for 72,000 deaths.
Please, what a bs. Yes it was warm, yes people didnt have a way too cool, yes elderly died. They do every year because it is warm. Or just old. Don't make a drama out of this, this is bs.

The joke's not on you, the 21st century began on Jan 1 2001. There was no year 0.

For computational reasons astronomers use a time scale in which AD 1 = year 1, 1 BC = year 0, 2 BC = year ?1, etc.
Therefore, 2010 AD is the end of the decade.
What you suddenly discount the year from birth, to your first year.. your now a year younger.

Most were Frenchmen. They surrendered to heat
For the earthquakes, what killed the people in 2004 Sumatra quake was the tsunami. The ocean bed shifted vertically about 40 meters !
