The girls were found by police at about 8:30 p.m. walking in a strip mall in the area of Byrne Road and Marine Way in Burnaby, seven kilometres from where they were last seen.
There was no suggestion of foul play, police said, but running away was out of character for both girls. It's possible they went into a wooded area that forms part of the neighbourhood, police said.
Several tips from the public helped in finding the two youngsters, who have been returned to their families.
That's great news but it makes me wonder if the media jumped the gun before they reported it. Did this get an Amber alert? That would have been the right response instead of a media report.
Law enforcement agencies are required to ensure that the following conditions are met before activating an AMBER Alert:
The victim is under the age of 18 Police have reasonable grounds to believe that the victim has been abducted Police have reasonable grounds to believe the victim is in imminent danger Police have obtained enough description information about the victim, abductor or an involved vehicle Police believe that the alert can be issued in a time frame that would provide a reasonable expectation that the child could be returned or the abductor could be apprehended.
If ALL of the above criteria are NOT met, an AMBER Alert will NOT be activated.
Seems like there's a whole lot of reasons why an Amber might never actually be called. Even though these kids weren't gone for more than 8 hours, I guess some press is still better than none.

The press no doubt assisted the police in locating the girls.
ANY help you can get locating a missing child is a blessing. The more people looking, the better the chance of finding them safe. I'm sure glad that was the case here.

I wonder how long they're grounded for.
