Sacrifice of soldiers worth holiday, poll says

While a National Holiday is required IMO I feel to many would just use it as an excuse to sleep in or some other type of activity, but in retrospcect it was the sacrifice of these brave souls we honour that gave todays generation those options.

I agree. To many lazy bastards already view Nov. 11 as a holliday.

I would like to see it so that our unit can actually parade on Remeberance Day instead of the 9th like this year. As for there not being enough people, I always push people to go whenever possible because we definitely need larger crowds at these things.

Using the rationale that too many people would use it to sleep in or waste it is a poor argument for why it isn't a national holiday. Why don't we get rid of Victoria Day then too, after all, nobody really uses it to celebrate the monarchy. Everyone just goes to the lake to drink beer...

I think it's sad that Canada doesn't have one national holiday dedicated to those who died for our country, while almost every other country has one. You can't force people to remember, but a national holiday and events in school would sure help.

Well there's pro's and cons to both sides off the arguement. With the way it is now at least most kids get to take part in some sort of rememberance day cerimony through there school. I don't think as many would get that if were just left up to parents who simply had the day off.

On the other hand there are many people who do want to attend the cerimonies but aren't able to because of work. *shrugs his shoulders*. I myself, I think it should be a stat holiday.

I say we ask the vets and military. It's their day.

I dont really care either way, I think PEN is right though, the vast majority of people will just go out and get hammered the night before so they can sleep in the next morning.

Well then how bout two days so I can go out and get hammered with my uncles on day of at the legion and then sleep in the next day...sound good?

Where do you live that it isn't a stat?

I know in Manitoba I have Tuesday off.

But my friend in Ontario, has to go to school on Tuesday.

My school service is on Monday, the 10th, and I'm playing in the Band, but I'll be using the 11th to:

a) sleep in
b) study for my Biology Midterm the next day.

Cuz as a reserve unit, people have jobs outside the military. So we do it on the closest weekend to the 11th so we can get as many people out as possible. Its also coordinated with the other units in the area and the police and we all march down to the cenotaph. Sucks in a way but at least we get everyone out.

You know, I don't even know if it is a stat or not, no one takes it off it in Calgary, well at least the people I know. They all take a day in lou around Christmas which basicly forces everyone to work Novemeber 11th.
