It's a safety precaution I guess., if it's needed to protect our citizens then yes, I think it's necessary.

I can fit 5 illegal immigrants in my cellphone with only enough room left for 2 days worth of food and water. That cellphone will really start to stink after about 3 days so if they can't get it back to me within 48 hours then I don't want it back.

No refunds for my secret travelers either...

If you put a frog in a pot of boiling water, he'll try to jump oiut. But, if you put him in a pot of cool water and slowly heat it to boiling, he won't realize it till it's too late.

Your rights are slowly being eroded, and you don't even seem to be aware of it, never mind care.

looks like you've started your own circle jerk

    man what

Of course I care. None of my rights nor anyone I know's rights have been taken away.

But, I can see why this is a problem, so I'm just going to STFU right now.

Thats an urban legend actually but your point is well taken.

Its ironic that Canada is criticized for its perceived lack of freedoms due to restrictions on firearms and hate speech laws by people who don't seem to concerned at the erosion of their own freedoms.

I guess it depends more on what freedoms you cherish more dearly.

I don't see why this is such news. France has reserved the right to copy hard drives for a long time and that's part of why they prohibit encryption higher than 128bit - because the Surete is a bunch of lazy bums who can't be bothered to hack anything better. Oh, and the Japanese routinely "inspect" the laptops of foreigners, too - that's why most American firms require laptops to be "sanitized" before they are allowed to go over seas. Sanitizing laptops was something I used to do when I worked at Intel and there was a long list of nations which we had to clean hard drives for.

So in this case we have the USA emulating France. Isn't that something you people usually celebrate?

Who "celebrates" the US emulating France?

Still, while you yourself have criticized Canada on the very subjects I just wrote about you seem oddly less concerned about it happening in your own backyard.

Personally the copying or investigation of laptops or other such devices is an unwarranted and unacceptable invasion of privacy. Many people keep their personal bank records, RRSPs, stock trading, etc. Thats theirs and not the buisness of any govt not to mention whatever private info is on it.

I would seriously examine the reasons why I needed to travel to a country that may require me to hand over such information and weigh if it was worth it to avoid giving up sucj information or travelling without it.

So.... you don't see this as news, Bart? I mean, you advocate carrying concealed weapons, but have no problem with some border guard going through your cel phone and laptop?
If you're a good citizen, you shouldn't worry about them going through your stuff.

    Do you honestly believe that?

Would you consent to random searches of your home under that theory? How about your being stopped on the street and thouroughly searched including a full cell phone autopsy?

So many rights have been violated on the principle "if you have nothing to hide"
