Russia historically has been somewhat paranoid of being attacked for good reason.

Post WW2 until about the death of Stalin the deliberate policy of the USSR was offensive....imperialism was the watchword. Once saner heads were involved this goal, the conquest of western europe was seen as an impossible goal.....with the result that USSR military policy took a defensive heading. The Cold War was largely based on this....Once the USSR figured out that NATO's goals were only defensive, glastnost and the thawing occured.

Now NATO's eastern limits are potentially on their border, without the Warsaw Pact territorial buffer.

A bit of sabre rattling is to be expected.

Our policy should be directed to the us vs them sceniario.....with Russia part of us rather than them.

So far as foreign relations go, I agree.

He fails to understand that his threats justify Ukraine having a missile defence.

I see the irony here. "OHHH IF YOU PUT A MISSILE DEFENSE SHIELD...WE WILL AIM OUR SOV...I MEAN RUSSIAN NUKES AT YOU" Putin's a dumbass who just answered Ukraine's dilemma. I wonder how Russia feels seeing that its former allies are now allying with the United States. Hell I read once that the Eastern European nations see US military technology as far superior and so they see it as the big step to modernize their military to get some US hardware.
