A warning to any Canadian thin-skinned about seeing the nation being portrayed in a negative light: There is no safe haven, right now, on international news sites.

I noticed all the comments in the national post video of him stepping down was all the PP ditto heads screaming for Trudeau's head but not one demanding the same for their dear leader who also stood up and applauded.

It's the duty of the Speaker's Office and of the sitting government to vet any person who appears in the Commons to receive a recognition or acknowledgement. It's not the job of the Opposition to do this task. Poilievre is what he is but despite your inane attempt at whataboutism none of this embarrassment is any of his fault at all.

It just shows how genuinely stupid some of our politicians, including the House Speaker, can truly be. This is what happens when history is regarded as unimportant by our ruling class, you end up seeing a chamber full of gullibles giving a round of applause to someone who volunteered to help out the Third Reich with their activities at places like Babi Yar, Rumbula, Ponary, or a thousand other murder sites. It's entirely credible to imagine that the current crop of MPs are that genuinely unware of history to completely not know that Eastern Europeans who were old enough to serve in World War Two & and who emigrated to Canada or the US after 1945 are a problematic lot. No, not all of them were war criminals who willingly massacred defenseless civilians as part of an auxiliary or police force for the Third Reich. But some of them definitely were. To not giving them at least a cursory examination to get a general idea of the background from their younger years before applauding them is a major dereliction of duty.

As for Canada's overall image in the world - we were barely lightweights in terms of foreign policy before Trudeau. During, and after, Trudeau we wouldn't even qualify as flyweights. That's how much this country has descended into true irrelevancy, both internationally and domestically, over the last ten to fifteen years. So when you wave your flags next Canada Day just know that you're celebrating a country that's become so insignificant that it's not even a shadow of a shadow anymore thanks to the idiocy over the last several generations of our political class. And, even more appallingly, mostly because of the sickening complacency of pretty much our entire self-satisfied & self-righteous population.

Careful PP. Standards you set for others will be used on you.

    What goes around comes around.

It was the job of the Speaker Mr Rota, not the PMO to have checked. So PP's kettle calling the pot black is the point.
Mr Rota needs to offer his resignation for embarrassing the whole country.

Rota has already resigned and the PMO does have the final say on what happens. That said they can't be in front of everything and someone like Rota would have to be assumed to not to bring shame on the chamber by default.

The onus is the the speaker, the PMO isn't supposed to be policing the speaker and they were clearly blindsided here. The speaker did the only thing he could to salvage the situation. The cons will keep calling for the PM to resign, they need to do that at the ballot box.

The Liberals can't dodge at least partial responsibility for this. Not when Rota was elected as a Liberal MP and appointed to the Speaker's chair by a Liberal government. There's a lot of blame to go around on this, especially when all it would have taken was a Google search by just one person in Parliament to find out that Poland has applications in to the Canadian government to have Hunka extradited into their custody for crimes his unit perpetrated on Polish citizens & Jews during the war.

I guess Canada really one-upped the US in a most horrible way with this debacle. When someone authentically disgusting like Matt Gaetz or Boebert or Taylor-Greene does something reprehensible like invite a Holocaust denier to attend a session of Congress just to troll the libs it can be easily turned around with a "Canada got us beat on this because they invited an actual Holocaust perpetrator to Parliament and gave him a standing ovation". Like, this one really sucks - we're basically now covered in the residue of something that erupted out of an almost eighty year old grave dating from when World War Two ended. All our old veterans, the greatest Canadians who ever lived, that fought against the Reich are probably all gone and instead we've got some decrepit old son of a bitch from the same time period who served with maniacal killers that enjoyed butchering women & children making us the center of a storm, a storm that was easily avoidable. That it happened from what appears to be from sheer laziness on the part of the Speaker and his office staff just makes it that much more wretched.

The thing that pisses me off the most about this whole mess, is the fuel that it's given to the Putin dickriders. They've been trying since day one to paint the Ukrainians as nothing more than Nazi's in disguise, and here some idiot MP goes and proves their point.

Here's a summary of just how big a fiasco this was:

When I think about this fiasco statistically, I am almost tempted to sympathize with Rota a little bit. Yaroslav Hunka is almost certainly the last surviving Canadian citizen to have fought for the SS in any theatre. There would probably have been no question of him receiving a parliamentary accolade unless he happened to live in the same parliamentary constituency as the Speaker, and perhaps to know him personally. What, I ask you without a shred of irony, are the odds? Thousands to one? Millions?

It may very well be that the Liberal government is blameless in what adds up to a dreadful Canadian foreign-policy fiasco; no doubt the access-to-information requests for the potential background of this scandal are being revved up as we speak. Rota, as Speaker, undoubtedly had the constitutional ability to recognize Hunka in his own remarks without even googling his background, which might have turned up the old chaps own written account of the reasons and context for his SS service. (Hunkas article mentions that, as a 16-year-old student, he wondered why Jewish classmates were running away from such a civilized western people as the Germans.) The very text of Rotas own speech Hey, you know who else fought against the Russians back in the early 40s? would surely have rung alarms in the mind of any semi-educated person who glanced at it.

The guy's page is in what's presumably Ukrainian, but Google Translate clears it up well enough. Not to mention that his talking about "fighting the Russians during World War II" should've been a red flag the size of Prince Edward Island right from the start.

I'm actually starting to get a headache trying to imagine how anyone could've possibly thought this was a good idea.

I keep thinking that Hota thought along the lines of "Ukraine is fighting Russia now, so fighting Russia in WWII must be good, right? And with what Russia had just done to Ukraine (Homolodor) they would be justified, right?"

Which makes sense, if you don't actually research anything.

From what I have read his son was in his riding. He suggested that he be there for the speech and then Rota ran with it and thought giving him citation would be a kudo to both his Ukrainian constituents and the Ukrainian people.

    Ego overpowered analitics.
