The comedians probably much prefer getting smacked in the mouth for a bad joke than getting career-cancelled anyway.
Will must have held off on the punch a bit. Given that he's a mass of muscle at any given time Rock wouldn't have stayed standing if he'd been belted full force.
Picking on a woman because of a medical condition isn't cool. I bet Smith wouldn't care if the joke was at his expense, but the Mrs. is crossing a line.
And it's not like Chris Rock isn't used to the negative coverage.
I think the slap was cheap, but the joke was cheaper.
Even though I never liked Stephen Harper, I never wrote anything about Mrs. Harper or the Harperlings. People hate Justin Trudeau and/or his father, but no one talks about his sister or mother.
There are lines you don't cross in civil society. I even think Sir Hopkins or Mr. Washington would have got up there and belted Mr. Rock. Will Smith took it too far, but I don't fault his wanting to defend his wife from ridicule.
"llama66" said I mean the slap was the best boost to ratings in 94 years, so good for the academy for choosing such an unorthodox way to boost ratings.
They 'considered' pulling him from the event.
IMHO, let it play out and then, when cooler heads are in the majority, make a policy change. If that is rescinding the award I'm fine with that. His outburst of incivility trampled upon many other performers moment in the sun. It was selfish and stupid and he needs to be held accountable.
It was refreshing to see some genuine old-school tough guy stuff for a change. Beats another spiel at the podium by DiCaprio about how "we're killing the planet with emissions!" right before he jets off to Ibiza with a plane full of whores and produces more pollution in one private flight than the rest of us do with our cars over the course of a entire decade.
Chris Rock was lucky it was someone as gentle as Will Smith who slapped him. If it had been some old timey badass like William Holden or Lawrence Tierney they wouldn't have found a single piece of Rock bigger than a postage stamp after the old boy was done with him.

Denzel, Tyler Perry and Anthony Hopkins all lined up behind Will. Assault on primetime TV isn't cool.

I have seen this movie before!
