Syriana Review

The first thing I'd like to say about this movie is this: if you are the easily distracted sort, this movie will confuse you. Also, if you were expecting to see George Clooney looking hunky, then you will be disappointed. Despite it's early confusion, when the movie's plot starts to come together, it becomes very engaging. The movie revovles around a bunch of personalities all connected byt the international oil trade is some way. There is the CIA agent Bob (Clooney) who is a middle east expert who gets screwed by the CIA. There is the energy consultant Bryan Woodman (Matt Damon) who ends up working for the Emir of an unnamed country (who is played by Siddig el Fadil who some might recognize from Star Trek:DS9). Back in DC, there is a prosecutor trying to uncover how a small fish oil company got the rights to build a lucrative pipeline. His efforts begin to unravel a chain of corruption in government that goes far and wide. There are also a number of bit players as well who I won't mention to keep the plot unruined. That being said, despite Clooney's leftward bent, the movie, I found, was deliberately made so as to make no clear distinction between right and wrong. Rather, the choices are between villainy in the pursuit of greed and villainly in the pursuit of progress. In the end, the movie's tagline (Everything is connected) is quite apt, as such things always are. I would definately reccomend this movie. It will make you think and dperess you at the same time.

    my score:
It was an ok movie.  Nothing more.  It seemed to be a snapshot of the international oil industry.  30 minutes into I asked "Is there a movie in here somewhere?"  There was plenty of intrigue - some of which was unexplained or I didn''t get.  Perhaps too many characters - lawyers, government officials, investigators, CIA, FBI, oil barons, Emirs, sons of Emirs.  It was tough to keep them all straight and who was working with who, who was onto who, what was going on.  The purpose of the movie was to show us that the US controls the world''s oil and will do anything to keep it that way.  The movie offered no hope for change and suggested no means of changing it.
