Investigators concluded that he killed himself, but some Russian media outlets questioned the official version, pointing to his intent to publish a sensitive report about secret arms deliveries to Iran and Syria.

Safronov's lawyers told the RIA Novosti news agency they will appeal the verdict. His supporters say the case is retribution for his reporting, which exposed details of Russia's international arms deals.

They pretty much have to. From a DW video I posted recently, the Russians have been firing so many rounds through their artillery, that the barrels have worn out. The arty has become so inaccurate, and ready to split the over heated and overworked barrels and so poorly maintained, that it's likely cheaper to buy new than to repair the old. And no one else will sell to them.

Russia's policy has always been 'why send soldiers in to where artillery can go first'.

Yup. And they've been shooting a LOT of arty. Almost a WW1 worth of shells in six months.
