rickc rickc:

This is pretty much Russian disinformation Rick and that 57% number she mentioned seems pulled out of her or Putin's ass, not reality.

The most recent polls I've seen (from Angus Reid in May) state that about 40% of Canadians feel we should do more, while another 40% feel our support right now is enough, and less than 15% think we should provide less support.

About the only thing correct in this video is the mention of Canada's low defence spending, which when measured per capita, is in the bottom third of NATO members. However, in US dollars spent, Canada is in the top third of NATO members on spending, surpassed only by the US, UK, France, Germany and Italy. That spending shows in what Canada can do - Canada constantly provides ships for NATO's Standing NATO Maritime Groups, a full battlegroup in Latvia, as well as personnel for other aspects of the alliance. We're bringing new Arctic patrol vessels online at one per year over the next 6 years, and close to announcing which fighter plane will replace the CF-18 Hornet.

Having said that, many Canadians, inlcuding most of us here on CKA, think Canada should be spending more, and a lot of us were surprised when the most recent budget added a measly $8B over the next five years. Sadly, as long as the Liberals are relying on the NDP to stay in power, I don't think we'll see a significant incrase in defence spending. Also having said that, we're spending much more than we were just 10 years ago (almost 50% more annually) and our spending is trending upwards, even if we aren't projected to hit the 2% GDP goal for NATO nations.

We should definitely being doing more and spending more, but we are not laggards or 'lambs' as she suggested.

Yup, I'd like Canada to be spending above the 2% mark.
